SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- Mezzo Marilyn Horne is the distinguished guest for the opening night gala. In keeping with this year's season-long salute to Aaron Copland, she'll be performing his Old American Songs; we also get Four Episodes from Rodeo (don't worry, some of Copland's meatier, more adventuresome stuff is coming up later in the year). Also excerpts from Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila and Thomas' Mignon. Otherwise, the orchestra is putting the same old foot forward: a suite from Carmen and (how's this for daring programming?) TUDOR CHOIR -- Peter Phillips, director of a little group called the Tallis Scholars (perhaps you've heard of them?) will guest conduct a collection of English Renaissance music: Byrd, Tallis, and Taverner. ELIZABETH FALCONER -- The gifted performer/composer presents her first recital entirely of her own work on the Japanese koto, the uncommonly lovely stringed instrument that rests on the floor. The seven different pieces are inspired by different artworks currently on exhibition as part of the Year of Japan series; Falconer's studied her art enough to be authentic, but is talented enough to be far from a slavish imitator.
