SATURDAY 10/16

OPUS 7 -- Seattle's finest vocal ensemble in a program of songs whose texts are inspired by "the beauty and mystery of the night." A five-century survey that includes Handel, Saint-Säens' "Calme des nuits," Wilbye, Brahms' "Waldesnacht," Britten, Pärt, Northwest composers Hallock and Asplin ("Phoenix" and "Harmony and Order," respectively), and the really exciting part of the bill: the Seattle premiere of the work of one of the better new composers I've heard, Chen Yi's "Written on a Rainy Night." "Piena sorgeva la luna" by the master of conservative 20th-century choral writing, Pizzetti, rounds out the bill. St. Mark's Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave E, 782-2354, 8 pm, $10 seniors and students/$17 general.

SUNDAY 10/17

NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA -- Schubert's unapproachable simplicity makes a perfect match for a day in the park. NCO members Christine Olason (violin), Andrea Chandler (cello), and Robin Miller (piano) perform the Sonatina in D, Op. 37 and the Piano Trio No. 2 in E flat. Seattle Asian Art Museum Auditorium, Volunteer Park, 343-0445, 2:30 pm, $22.50 seniors and students/$24.50 adults.

FRIENDS OF RAVENNA WOODS -- A benefit concert to help raise money to purchase the woods from a developer and have them permanently preserved. Music is secondary for events like this, so beyond "favorite" works of Brahms, Grieg, and Telemann, I can't give you a clue what's playing. St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 4805 NE 45th, 523-1771, 3 pm, $15 ("income-sensitive")/$25.

TUESDAY 10/19

ANGELA HEWITT -- The best efforts of the period movement notwithstanding, Bach on piano has mercifully never gone out of style. This gifted interpreter performs the Goldberg Variations, plus Handel's Chaconne and Variations in G and Beethoven's Eroica Variations, Op. 35. Meany Theater, University of Washington, 543-4880 or 292-ARTS, 8 pm, $27.
