CLASSICAL
by Bruce Reid THURSDAY 11/11
SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- After a whiff of the old country, this is a Pops series with a vengeance; first, Adam Stern leads the symphony in Dvorák's Slavonic Dance, Rogers' Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, and Bernstein's Overture to West Side Story. Then Frank Sinatra Jr. takes the stage for some unspecified crooning. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, Thurs Nov 11, 7:30 pm; Fri Nov 12, 8 pm; Sat Nov 13, 2 pm & 8 pm; and finally (whew!) Sun Nov 14, 2 pm, $15-$52, 215-4747, or www.seattlesymphony.org.
SATURDAY 11/13
CROCKETT STREET BRASS QUINTET -- A busy day for concerts kicks off (alphabetically) with this recital for the most rousing of ensembles. Bach and Dukas for the "traditional" part of the program; Ewazen, C. Luckyth Roberts, and Samuel Scheidt for the "modern." Bethany Lutheran Church, 7400 Woodlawn Ave NE, Sat Nov 13, 8 pm, free, though donations accepted.
CLAIRE GARABEDIAN -- The principal cellist of the Seattle Baroque Orchestra is joined by harpsichordist Susan Jenson, from the Portland Baroque Orchestra, for an evening of (surprise, surprise) Baroque music. Bach, Geminiani, Vivaldi, Boccherini, et al. Queen Anne Christian Church, 1316 Third Ave W, Sat Nov 13, 8 pm, $10 seniors & students/$12 general, 325-7066.
GOVERNOR'S CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES -- What musical profile of Gary Locke's stewardship can be determined by the programming of a reduction of Stravinsky's L'Historie du Soldat for Clarinet, Violin, & Piano; the polite folkisms of Kodaly's String Trio; Dvorák's emotive Piano Quintet Op. 81; and Ginastera's Sonata No. 1 for Piano? Personally, I'd rather have the complete Stravinsky, the rude folkisms of Bartók, and later Ginastera, but I'll leave the conclusions to the politically astute. State Theater, 202 Fourth Ave E, Olympia, Sat Nov 13, 8 pm, $16 students & seniors/$19 general, 360-786-0151.
TACOMA YOUTH SYMPHONY -- A nearly all-French recital -- Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice, Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3 (Organ), and airs from Massenet and Bizet -- but the interest stems from an Italian-American; Menotti's lovely, light The Telephone. Soprano Mia Spencer handles the vocal duties. Rialto Theater, Tacoma, Sat Nov 13, 7:30 pm, $10 balcony seating/ "Free-Will" donation main floor seating, 253-591-5894.
