CLASSICAL

FRIDAY 1/7-

SUNDAY 1/9SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL -- Three whole days of music. The programs are nicely eclectic, if a bit on the hummable side; the more adventurous composers (Cowell, Bartok) are represented by their more audience-friendly stuff (Set of Five, Contrasts). There's not a bad piece to be heard, though. Friday consists of the Cowell, Shostakovich's Trio Op. 67, Andres' Narthex, and Brahms' Clarinet Quintet. Saturday begins with a family concert, reasonably priced at $5, where the kids can be introduced to the music and life of Haydn, and wander an instrument "petting zoo" in the lobby. Haydn starts off the evening concert as well (Trio in C, Hob. XV/21), with Contrasts, Dvork's Trio Op. 65, and a collection of Bolcom's cabaret songs. Sunday wraps things up with Schubert's Violin Sonata in G, D. 408; Rorem's Trio for Flute, Cello, and Piano; Debussy's Premiere Rapsodie; and more Brahms, this time the Piano Quartet in C, Op. 60. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, Fri Jan 7, 8 pm, Sat Jan 8 at 4 pm and 8 pm, and Sun Jan 9 at 3 pm, 283-8808 or 292-ARTS, $15 students/$30 general (seniors $15 at the door one hour before seating), discount passes to the entire festival are also available.

MONDAY 1/10CASCADE SYMPHONY -- Some heavyweight American romantics are the highlights here: Barber's Violin Concerto (Maria Larionoff soloing), Beach's Bal Masque, and Still's Afro-American Symphony. Plus Sousa and Libby Larsen's Overture for the End of the Century -- good timing, that. Moore Theatre, Second and Virginia, 8 pm, 425-778-4688, $10 students & seniors/$15 general.

WEDNESDAY 1/12LEIF OVE ANDSNES -- No word on the pianist's program, but his intelligence shines in almost everything he essays. Well, okay, I've only heard his Haydn (superb), but I've read he's as good with the rest of the repertoire. Meany Theater, University of Washington, 8 pm, 543-4880, $27..
