CLASSICAL

by Bruce Reid

THURSDAY 4/27

SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- The "Masterpiece" series takes its name seriously for this program, too much so for my taste. But if Elgar's Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet and String Orchestra, R. Strauss' Horn Concerto No.1, Brahms' Tragische OuvertĂźre, and Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 6 all live up to the title for you, then enjoy. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 7:30 pm, Fri April 28, 8 pm, 215-4747 or seattlesymphony.org, $10-$67.

FRIDAY 4/28

ORCHESTRA SEATTLE -- A sprightly collection of neoclassical works that refract the work of past masters through an early-20th-century lens. Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks concerto (modeled on the Brandenburgs); Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 2 (based on several Renaissance tunes); and Richard Strauss' Divertimento after Couperin. Also, the premiere of Roupen Shakarian's Flute Concerto. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 8 pm, 682-5208 or www.osscs.org, $5 students/$10-$15 seniors/$15-$20 general.

SATURDAY 4/29

SEATTLE BAROQUE ORCHESTRA -- A program of Bach Cantatas. Which ones, you ask? Why, the "festive" ones, of course. BWV 209, Non sa che sia dolore, and BWV 202, the ever-popular "Wedding Cantata." Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 322-3118, 8 pm, $18 students & seniors/$23 general.

SUNDAY 4/30

MEDIEVAL WOMEN'S CHOIR -- The 1970s weren't alone in being blighted by the presence of the singer-songwriter-poet; they flourished in 13th-century Paris as well, under the name of trouvères. Here's an evening of their work, with particular attention paid to Adan de la Halle's Robin and Marian. The Church, 6556 35th Ave NE, 325-7066, 8 pm, $10 students/$15 general.

TUESDAY 5/2

KYUNG SUN CHEE -- The UW faculty member shows off his fiddling with Sonatas from Mozart, Beethoven, and Franck. If nothing else, the price is right. Brechemin Auditorium, Music Room 126, UW Campus, 685-8384, 8 pm, free.

SOUNDTRACK CINEMA -- This week, Basil Poledouris' score from the 1982 epic Conan the Barbarian. KING 98.1 FM, 10 pm.
