CLASSICAL

by Bruce Reid

THURSDAY 5/11

SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- "Music of Our Time" gives its salute to Copland: Music for the Theatre (1925), Short Symphony (1933), Appalachian Spring (1944), and the most recent of these "Our Time" selections, Eight Poems of Emily Dickinson (1950). And as long as I'm complaining, why not give us all 12 Dickinson settings? Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $15.

SATURDAY 5/13

NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA -- Not content to just let the big boys get aboard the Aaron Copland centennial gravy tr... er, celebration, the NWCO offers up his Clarinet Concerto and Two Pieces for String Orchestra. The Concerto is from the '40s and the Two Pieces from 25 years earlier, and my handy rule of thumb on Copland is the earlier the composition, the more I'll like it. Also Haydn's Symphony No. 34 in D, and Santa Cruz's Symphony No. 2. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 343-0445, 8 pm (Sun May 14, 2:30 pm), $22.50 students & seniors/$24.50 general.

SUNDAY 5/14

VIOLA STUDENT RECITAL -- Another of the UW's summer events, this one focusing on the oft-neglected but quite lovely viola. Having seen enough student recitals, I can promise you there'll be several wrong notes (some wince-worthy) and a handful of restarts. But hey, you'll definitely get your money's worth. Brechemin Auditorium, Music 216, UW Campus, 685-3834, 8 pm, free.

TUESDAY 5/16

MITSUKO UCHIDA -- This fine Schubertian performs the Sonata in D, D. 850. From the unique intellectuality Uchida brings to Schubert (all I've heard her perform), there is no doubt she'll do excellently by Chopin's Sonata No. 2 in B flat and Mozart's Adagio in B, K.540; and the spectral hunt-and-peck of Webern's Variations, Op. 27, in fact, seems a perfect match with the performer, if an odd programming choice. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $10-$62.

WEDNESDAY 5/17

STUART DEMPSTER -- I forgot to list the first of these weekly "Sound Massage Parlor" installments last time around, but they're continuing every Wednesday through June, so you've still got plenty of chances. Each concert is aiming for only seven to 11 people, and trombonist/composer/musical spelunker Dempster is "available to perform specific healings tailored to individual audience members' needs." Uh-huh. Good thing Dempster is a genius; otherwise that sentence would have landed this press release right in the trash. Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, 634-0919 or e-mail heatherg@jackstraw.org, 7 and 9 pm, $7 members/$10 non-members/children free.

RADIO SHOWS

by Juan-Carlos Rodriguez

FRIDAY 5/12

MICKEY AND MINNIE'S TUNE TIME -- Ho, ho, hey kids! You didn't think that good old Uncle Walt would ignore the time-honored show-biz arena of radio, did you? Liven up your morning with two full hours of Mickey and Minnie's favorite Top-40 pablum. Disney corporate zombie marches are a great way to exercise during your lunch hour, too! RADIO DISNEY 1250 AM, 11 am.

SATURDAY 5/13

AMERICAN ROUTES -- Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast bluesman Clarence Gatemouth Brown is the focus of this two-hour special highlighting his unique brand of music. He will also be interviewed. KUOW 94.9 FM, 1 pm.

SUNDAY 5/14

PREACHIN' THE BLUES -- Get a dose of real music for three full hours, baby. Hear true, gritty soul from around these United States, from men with gravel in their guts and women who stand tall and proud. Listen to their hearts ache and their guitars wail; hear confessions of evil and celebrations of love. KCMU 90.3 FM, 9 am.

MONDAY 5/15

MARINERS VS. TWINS -- Although they are in first place now, when September comes and the pennant is on the line, it'll be so much more rewarding for you if you've followed them all year. KIRO 710 AM, 7:05 pm.
