CLASSICAL

THURSDAY 6/15

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Mahler's Symphony No. 3 isn't as gargantuan as that composer's Eighth, but with choir, solo singer, and extended orchestra it's big enough; a Symphony of a Couple of Hundred, say, if not a Thousand. Like most of the cycle, it can be transcendent and blossoming or excruciatingly labored depending on the performance, and Schwarz is pretty far from my favorite Mahlerian. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm; Fri-Sat June 16-17, 8 pm; Sun June 18, 2 pm. $10-$67.

WEDNESDAY 6/21

ROOMsolstice--A special solstice edition of Stuart Dempster's ongoing Wednesday night "healing" series at Jack Straw. Other improvisers will be joining the trombonist in his performance of "scores" drawn and painted by Renko Ishida Dempster. You're invited to show up at any time, wander freely amid the sights and sounds, and leave when you like. The recent Dempster/Oliveros/etc. collaboration in Pioneer Square was a fine Lucier-esque exploration of space, but perhaps taking in small bits is a better idea overall. Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, 6-10 pm, free.

THURSDAY 6/15

SOUNDPRINT--"People and Trees." Hear a tree-planter, a logger, a young forest ecologist, some conservationist nuns, and fiction writer Rick Bass discuss the future of trees and how our "electronic future" may affect them. KUOW 94.9 FM, 7:30 pm.

FRIDAY 6/16

BEST WRITERS AT BUMBERSHOOT--If you weren't able to catch some of the literature at Bumbershoot the first few times around, now is your chance--and you don't even have to sit through the crap. Highlighting only the best of the best from Bumbershoot '96-'98. KUOW 94.9 FM, 9:30 pm.

JAZZ PARTY--Just as the title would suggest, it's a night full of jazz: bluesy jazz, funky jazz, Latin jazz and soul, and everything in between. Tune in to party with host Robin Slivka, and, of course, hear some pretty good jazz. KBCS FM 91.3, 9:00 pm.

SATURDAY 6/17

BEST OF LEYKIS--As if any of it was good the first time around, KQBZ replays the "Best of Leykis" every Saturday evening from 4-7 pm. Now that you've been informed, whether you use this information to tune in and listen or to avoid it like the plague is strictly up to you. KQBZ 100.7 FM, 4 pm.

MONDAY 6/19

GENERATIONS RADIO THEATRE--If you're anything like me, you never finished reading The Odyssey in high school. Now there's no excuse. Slackers can catch part one of Homer's Odyssey tonight, and tune in Tuesday, same time, to actually finish it. KUOW 94.9 FM, 9:30 pm.
