SATURDAY 8/12

ORCHESTRA SEATTLE AND SEATTLE CHAMBER SINGERS--Why programmers so often feel the lazy days of summer are perfectly suited to baroque music I have no idea; even at its sunniest, the lively formality of the period always brings to mind spring showers. But Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 does have the relaxed stateliness of a hot afternoon in its final movement, and like most Italian works, Corelli's Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 4 is never far from the inspiration of il sole. Also, Bach's cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, and the brief Prayer of St. Gregory in belated tribute to its composer Alan Hovhaness. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 8 pm, 292-ARTS, $15-$20 general, $5-$15 students, $10-$15 seniors.

WEDNESDAY 8/16

DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE--What's in a name? Plenty, as the Artists Formerly Known as the Young Composers Collective will attest. Their new moniker doesn't have the ring of grad school about it, though it might be a bit glib in referencing the Entarte Kunst and Musik displays the Nazis put on; of course, Bartók famously expressed his disappointment in being left out of the show, so there's some precedent. And the name does help pin down the major influences of the group: cabaret and art music between the wars, with some spiky modernity and jazz swing thrown in. Paradox Theater, 5510 University Way NE, 524-7677, 8 pm, $6.

THURSDAY 8/10

GOODBYE PORKPIE HAT--It's a night full of beat-bop, poetry, and jazz. If for no other reason at all, tune in just because of the show's name. KBCS 91.3 FM, 9 pm.

SATURDAY 8/12

SOUNDTRACK CINEMA--Grab your cape and tights for tonight's ode to superheroes who flew from the pages of their comic books straight to the big screen. Tonight's show features music from the classics, including The Incredible Hulk, Batman, and my personal favorite, Super Girl. If you can help it, no matter how good the music is, don't get too carried away--you still can't fly. KING 98.1 FM, 10-11 pm.

SONARCHY--Just when you thought it was safe to sleep, it's time to crank up that bass. Barricade are live in the Jack Straw studios with their crazy drum and bass sounds to keep you from dozing off. KCMU 90.3 FM, 11 pm.

SUNDAY 8/13

DRUDGE REPORT--He's said to be the guy that cracked the Lewinsky/Clinton scandal to the public before it hit the mainstream press, so if you're achin' for some hot gossip, spend some time with Matt Drudge as he breaks news, from political scandals to big Hollywood secrets. KVI 570 AM, 8-10 pm.

TUESDAY 8/15

DR. LAURA--I don't feel I have the power to tell you what is worthy of your ears and what isn't. So, seeking a better advisor, I asked my Magic 8 Ball if you should listen. Tragic thing, though... before I could see the answer, I dropped it and it rolled out into the street where it was crushed by a car, throwing black plastic shrapnel and blue water into the nearby crosswalk and all over an elderly woman on her way to visit her grandchildren. I couldn't help but notice the pyramid die lying at my feet: "Outlook not so good." KOMO 1000 AM, noon-4 pm.
