CLASSICAL

THURSDAY 11/30

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Pieces inspired by trips to Scotland (Mendelssohn's tempestuous Symphony No. 3 in a), Max Ernst paintings (Matthus' Bride of the Wind), and that greatest and most prevalent inspiration for composers since time immemorial, a paid commission (Saint-Saëns' exciting Piano Concerto No. 2 in g). Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $10-$69. Also Sat Dec 2, 8 pm; and Sun Dec 3, 2 pm.

FRIDAY 12/1

ELLIOTT BAY PIPE BAND--Were you aware that a Washington state pipe band has not performed in the World Pipe Band Championships since 1969? Well, that disgraceful lapse will be rectified at next year's event--but only with your help! This Celtic Winter Holidays Concert is a fundraiser to send the good men and women of the EBPB to Glasgow. Dare to dream, Seattle. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 628-0888, 7:30 pm, $10 general, $7 seniors/children (under 12).

SEATTLE COMPOSERS' SALON--This month's installment of new works, previews, and works-in-progress. Seattle Mennonite Church, 3120 NE 125th, 548-0981 or tbaker@drizzle.com, 8 pm, $5 suggested donation.

SUNDAY 12/3

BELLA MUSICA WOODWIND TRIO--Christmas time already? The year's first real seasonal concert features Christmas music from Vivaldi, Haydn, and Tchaikovsky (selections from Nutcracker, naturally); but also a world premiere in the form of Nancy Bondurant's The Magi's Gift, based upon that O. Henry story that gets about as old this time of year as, say, The Nutcracker. Seattle Asian Art Museum, Volunteer Park, 654-3100, 2 pm, $12 general, $6 students/seniors.

OPUS 7--Of course, Bella Musica only has the first Xmas concert by a matter of a few hours. In what might become a holiday tradition, Opus 7 returns with Britten's lovely and enjoyably theatrical cantata St. Nicolas, the evening rounded off with Muehleisen's The Great "O" Antiphons and Kodály's Veni, Veni Emmanuel. St. James Cathedral, Ninth and Marion, 782-2899 or www.opus7.org, 7:30 pm, $20 suggested donation, students & seniors pay as able.

MONDAY 12/4

COMPOSERS WORKSHOP--New works by UW student composers. Learn whether Battey, Ewing, Forsland, Parmenter, and Sofia are names to keep an eye out for. Brechemin Auditorium, UW School of Music, 685-8384, 7:30 pm, free.

TACOMA NEW MUSIC--Northwest composers get an evening in the spotlight. New works in both the classical and avant-jazz genres by Ryan Hare, Al Hood, Jim Knodle, Clement Reid (no relation), and Gloria Swisher. Tacoma Little Theater, 210 N "I" St, Tacoma, www.new-music.org, 8 pm, $10 general, $5 students/ seniors.

THURSDAY 11/30

SOUNDPRINT--Get a glimpse into the lives of a few extraordinary people. Triple-amputee Thecla Michell lives life with one wrist, one elbow, and one set of fingers, and she does so successfully. Blind jazz pianist Henry Butler is also a photographer, bridging a gap between the sighted and sightless. These stories and others either inspire you or make you feel really, really lazy. KUOW 94.9 FM, 7:30 pm.

FRIDAY 12/1

THE MELTING POT--Hosts Dave Gardner and Tobin Steers throw together spices and tunes from around the world, stirring gently for about and hour, and serving it up piping hot, ready for your enjoyment. Don't choke. KBCS 91.3 FM, 7 pm.

SATURDAY 12/2

NO ROOM FOR SQUARES--Punk is dead but hard bop is back! No Room for Squares returns from hiatus to bring you bop from the '50s and '60s, with an emphasis on Blue Note artists. KUPS 90.1 FM, 1 pm.

E TOWN--Music, environmental news, and guests Natalie Merchant, Pete Seeger, and Rick Danko and Garth Hudson of the Band. KBCS 91.3 FM, 4 pm.

THE LIVE ROOM--I've seen Fairgrove live, but I'm drawing a blank as to how the show went. Groovy, slow rock seems to come to mind. Luckily, they're going to be on The Live Room to refresh any other forgetful minds out there. Then you can decide yourself what they sound like. KCMU 90.3 FM, 8 pm.

SUNDAY 12/3

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS--I tell you every week, but do you ever listen to me? Do you ever listen to The Young and the Restless, the two hours per week worth tuning into on the End? I don't believe that you do. Am I going to have to give you a local-indie-rock quiz? I don't want to have to do that, but I will if I have to. KNDD 107.7 FM, 9 pm.
