CLASSICAL
by Bruce Reid

FRIDAY 3/2

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--The "Basically Baroque" series goes neo-Baroque for an evening, with Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances: Set III, and the composer's witty orchestration of Bach's Violin Sonata in E. Adaptations remain the rule in Bach/Sitkovetsky's Dance Suite No. 1 in g and the Tartini/Kreisler Devil's Trill. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747, www.seattlesymphony.org, 8 pm, $15-$49. Also Sat Mar 3, 8 pm.

SATURDAY 3/3

COMPUTER MUSIC ACROSS GENERATIONS--Seattle's William O. Smith and Stuart Dempster perform some of their acknowledged classics--Dempster's Standing Waves for computer and trombone worth attending for alone. Then new works from Joe Anderson and UW composition grad student Donald Craig. Brechemin Auditorium, School of Music Room 126, UW campus, 685-8384, 8 pm, $8 general/$5 students & seniors.

OPUS 7--A five-hundred-year-old world premiere? Well, technically the missing parts of Gesualdo's Veni Sancte Spiritus have been provided by Seattle's Bern Herbolsheimer, but it's still good news to hear. As are pieces by Rautavaara, Bartolucci, Sviridov, and a U.S. premiere of Miserere for chorus and cello from Belgium's Rudy Tas. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 782-2354, 8 pm, $17 general/$12 students & seniors.

SUNDAY 3/4

SEATTLE CHORAL COMPANY--Two marvelous, outsized Te Deums: Berlioz's, so human and terrified, and Verdi's, so majestic and devout. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 363-1100, 7:30 pm, $25-$30.

SHOSTAKOVICH STRING QUARTET--The 20th century dances into view with Stravinsky's sprightly, modernist Three Pieces for String Quartet and the lyrical but haunted Third Quartet in F from the ensemble's namesake. Also Schumann's Quartet in A, Op. 42, No. 3; about as far from the 20th century as you can get. Meydenbauer Center, 11100 NE 6th, Bellevue, 325-6500, 7:30 pm, $18 general/$9 students.

MONDAY 3/5

ITZHAK PERLMAN--From one violin master to another, a centennial salute to Jascha Heifetz. Fauré's elegant Sonata in A for Violin and Piano, Op. 13 and Saint-Saëns' Sonata No. 1 in d, Op. 75 are the musical highlights, but an unspecified selection of Heifetz's transcriptions are sure to provide the fireworks. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747, www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $25-$77.

UW METAL PERCUSSION BAND--The world premiere of UW student David Reeves' L'Image d'Eau, which had better be pretty strong considering the fine company it's keeping: Harrison's Fifth Symphony for Percussion Quartet; Cage's Experiences 1; works by Beck and Spears; and last and most certainly least, an arrangement of Pearl Jam's "Jeremy." Meany Studio Theater, UW campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $8 general/$5 students & seniors.
