CLASSICAL
by Christopher DeLaurenti

THURSDAY 8/2

STUART DEMPSTER--Matthew Bauer, Stuart Keeler, and Suzie Kozawa join trombone pioneer and benevolent spirit Stuart Dempster for an aural array of sound works. They plan to immerse you in the resonance of a man-made cistern, a vortex of immigrant voices, and natural sounds from the Pacific Northwest. Expect a closing jam session with found objects and handmade instruments. Kudos to the Bed of Sound curators for corralling four sound artists who present their work all too infrequently in Seattle. Henry Art Gallery, UW Campus, 543-2281, 7 pm, $8-$10.

FRIDAY 8/3

OLYMPIA CHORAL SOCIETY--In a concert titled "Evening Songs & Spirituals," this 16-voice choir sings the music of Johannes Brahms, Moses Hogan, Giovanni Palestrina, and Freddie Mercury. Somewhere, a Julliard graduate slaves away at a choral arrangement of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in vain. The United Churches, 110 11th Ave SE (across the street from the Capitol Building), Olympia, (360) 491-2244, 7:30 pm, free. Also on Saturday, Aug 4.

SATURDAY 8/4

OLYMPIC CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL--The Jupiter Trio performs classic Russian chamber music: the Trio in D minor for Piano and Strings by Glinka (described by Stravinsky as a "Russian Rossini"), Five Melodies for Piano and Violin, op. 35b by Prokofiev, and the Rachmaninioff "Elegiac" Trio in G minor. The Barn, Center Road, Quilcene, (206) 527-8839, 2 pm, $14-$24. Also Sun Aug 5.

MONDAY 8/6

CAROLE TERRY--Hearing Petrushka thundering through the streets of downtown Seattle a decade or so ago cemented my love for lunchtime concerts. Symphony organist Carole Terry plays music from the German Romantic era, circa 1850 give or take 25 years. She'll announce the pieces from the stage, which gives fastidious calendar writers like me conniptions but spares you the distracting rustle of concert programs. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St, 215-4747, 12:30 pm, free.

TUESDAY 8/7

BALDOZ/CANTERBURY--This whimsical double bill presents the Baldoz/Canterbury duo in tandem with Jesse Ratzkin's play " Six Paperclips in Search of a Supply Room." Although known primarily as adventurous improvisers, clarinetist Jesse Canterbury and trumpeter Angelina Baldoz will also premiere a composition by Tallahassee composer/guitarist Ethan Schaffner. I'm told the play "is an audience-participatory play featuring office supplies. No, real office supplies. Like paper clips and staplers and such. Honest. And, no, we don't think this is the slightest bit unusual." We shall see. Coffee Messiah, 1554 E Olive, 8 pm, free.

WEDNESDAY 8/8

COMPOSER SPOTLIGHT--How can musicians survive (or at least endure) the dirty business of music? I, for one, dip sour-cream-and-onion potato chips in cottage cheese, but others take a more aggressive tack. Clarinetist and composer Sean Osborn will discuss his trials, tribulations, and triumphs as a Classical musician hawking his wares on the web while presumably coping with MP3.com's incessant nickel-and-dime schemes ("Premium Artist Service," "New Music Army," "Back the Band!" etc.). Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, 634-0919, 7:30 pm, free.
