UNIVERSITY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA--Conductor Jeremy Briggs Roberts leads this talented student band in Corelli's Concerto Grosso in D Major, op. 6 no. 7 and Dvorak's Serenade for Winds in D minor, op. 44. They will also perform Haydn's Symphony no. 44 in E minor, dubbed the "Tragic" because back then, symphonies with silly nicknames were easier to sell. TACOMA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL--I always cringe when a Classical music festival adopts a grandiose appellation. While I applaud booking stellar performers like Kathleen Battle, Byron Janis, and Jon Nakamatsu, limiting the festival to European Classical composers circa 1675-1935 looks tawdry: It's like proclaiming yourself Grand Galactic Emperor when you actually rule several solar systems and some stray moons. SATURDAY 8/18

ARTS IN NATURE FESTIVAL--Alongside Classical, Folk, Rock, and Jazz, this festival has a healthy dose of the Avant, including the Animist Orchestra, Ensemble Non Grata, Christian Swenson, Bill Horist, Gamelan Pacifica, and the Knotty Ensemble. Assorted composers and sound artists collaborate on sound installations and performances at each cabin, too. Both days start with "moving circles of sound" where wandering musicians--trombonist Stuart Dempster, dried-kelp virtuoso Suzie Kozawa, stringboard maker Dave Knott, and others--coalesce and fragment into groups throughout the camp. MARROWSTONE MUSIC FESTIVAL--Glenn Gould was right: early Beethoven is very addictive. I'm always pleased when pieces like the Piano Trio in C minor, op. 1, no. 3 crop up at concerts. Also on the program: Brahms' Four Serious Songs arranged for bass trombone and piano as well as Schubert's Trout Quintet. OWEN CANNON--As part of their squeaky-clean "Young Artists at the Organ" series, plucky 17-year old Owen Cannon performs works of Bach, Mendelssohn, Franck, and Locklair. MILLINGTON/CALLAND--To celebrate the one-year anniversary of St. James' Rosales pipe organ, this London-based duo play stirring voluntaries for organ and trumpet. St. James Cathedral, 804 9th Ave, 382-4874, 7:30 pm, $15.
