CLASSICAL
by Christopher DeLaurenti

FRIDAY 10/5

SEATTLE OPERA--The opera ain't cheap, so if you want to find out what the Seattle Opera's upcoming production of Dvorak's Rusalka sounds like, this lecture and music preview offers a glimpse of the whole shebang. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 1:30 pm, free.

EZERMAN/GARRETT/SHEA--Although musicians of all genres face the dilemma of finding a moniker, I think Classical players have the hardest choice: Choose a non-Classical name (e.g. Blue Cardboard Pimps) and confuse everyone, or become The (insert any noun, especially a foreign one) Ensemble (or Trio, or Duo, or however many are in the group) and copy every other Classical group out there. A few stick with their own names, which is what clarinetist David Shea, cellist Alex Ezerman, and pianist Jennifer Garrett have done. This trio from Texas performs works by Bruch, Lindberg, Montecino, and Beethoven. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 8 pm, $8-$10.

GALLERY CONCERTS--This gig purports to re-create a typical domestic concert heard in Jane Austen's England circa 1790-1815. Soprano Valerie Yockey and violinist/fiddler Rob Diggins perform chamber music found in Austen's personal music collection. Pianists Tamara Friedman and George Bozarth will use a Broadwood piano, which is mentioned in Austen's novels and a precursor to the modern concert grand. Broadwood pianos have a cult following; ten years ago I helped sell a marvelous Broadwood grand to one of the guys in Steppenwolf. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 726-6088, 8 pm, $11-$21.

SATURDAY 10/6

THE ESOTERICS--While some groups do themed concerts, the Esoterics do themed seasons. Lunae is the second part of a season-long musical traversal of the stars, sun, moon and light. Aside from choral works from Estonia, Hungary, and Mexico, this concert boasts several premieres by Northwest composers: David Asplin's Walk to the Well, the second movement of Byron Au Yong's Tian Wen (Questions of Heaven), John Muehleisen's Watching the Moon Go Down, and Donald Skirvin's setting of Percy Bysshe Shelley's Homeric Hymn to the Moon. Pilgrim Congregational Church, Broadway E, http://www.theesoterics.org/, 8 pm, $14-$17. Also 10/7.

SUNDAY 10/7

SCOTT SHAW--Visiting organist Scott Shaw has compiled a varied and generous program of favorites and obscurities. The UW alumnus will play Buxtehude's Toccata in D minor, Tunder's Choralfantasie, Prelleur's Voluntary in D minor, Bouvet's Trois Preludes Hambourgeois, Handel's Concerto for the Organ in B-flat major, op. 4, no. 2 and a pile of other pieces. Walker-Ames Room at Kane Hall, UW Campus, 685-8384, 8 pm, $8-$10.

MONDAY 10/8

SHANK/MASTENBROOK--This inaugural lunchtime concert season of the Ladies Musical Club features compositions by Maurice Ravel, Astor Piazzola, and Joaquin Turina. Cellist Harriet Shank and pianist Johanna Mastenbrook will conclude the program with Brahms' Sonata in E minor. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 652-4255, 12:10 pm, free.
