MUSIC OF OUR TIME--Alastair Willis leads members of the Seattle Symphony in a concert of recent music: Zhou Long's Five Maskers, H.K. Gruber's Photo-Fit Pictures, Joseph Schwantner's Distant Runes and Incantations, and H.K. Gruber's Frankenstein!! A Pan-Demonium for Baritone Chansonnier and Orchestra, a Halloween tale narrated by the composer. The pre-concert lecture starts at 6:30 pm with Janice Giteck; stick around for the post-concert talk; some frustrated composer in the audience (not me this time, I promise!) might ask some pointed questions and get the discussion cooking. ST. PAUL'S CHOIR--In recognition of the Day of the Dead, the choir of St. Paul's Episcopal Church sings Juan Esquivel's Missa pro defunctis ("Mass for the Dead"). The piece will be sung in its intended setting within a real Requiem Mass, instead of in a staged concert. The Cocktail Crowd should note that this Esquivel lived circa 1563-1613 and is not the mastermind behind Mucho Muchacho and other spastic stereophonic delights from the 1950s. FRIDAY 11/2

DOROTHY PAPADAKOS--Organist at NYC's Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, Dorothy Papadakos gives St. Mark's newly restored organ a run for the money with Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Gigout's Toccata in B minor, and Deep Blue, an improvisation with (presumably prerecorded) humpback whales. SATURDAY 11/3

HELEN CALLUS--UW faculty violist Helen Callus has unearthed music for viola and piano written by British women. I have not heard these early 20th-century folk-inflected works by Pamela Harrison, Rebecca Clarke, Janetta Gould, and Freda Swain, but rounding up so many unknowns makes this a tempting gig. SUNDAY 11/4

MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE--This concert marks the 63rd anniversary of Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass. In Germany on the nights of November 9 and 10 1938, Nazi stormtroopers destroyed 101 synagogues and sent thousands of Jews to concentration camps. On the program: Osvaldo Golijov's Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind, Berlinski's From the World of My Father, Haas' Four Songs on Chinese Poetry, and Korngold's Lieder, op. 38. Catch the pre-concert lecture by Martin Goldsmith, author of The Inextinguishable Symphony at 6:45 pm. Recital Hall at Benaroya, 200 University St, 365-7770, 7:30 pm, $15/$20.

TUESDAY 11/6

KYUNG SUN CHEE--Ah, 'tis the season for UW faculty recitals and a fine opportunity to hear top flight performers at bargain prices. Kyung Sun Chee, who teaches fiddle playing at the UW, performs violin sonatas by Mozart, Schumann, and Ravel. School of Music alumnus Laurent Philippe accompanies on piano.
