THURSDAY JUNE 27

THE ELECTRICS

For a feast of extended techniques on horns, reeds, and guitars, look no further than this show. The triple bill features master innovators and improvisers on trumpet (the Electrics led by Axel Dörner), clarinet (Gebhard Ullmann and his Clarinet Trio, and guitar (local guitar shredders Horist and Rea, and Portland's superb Doug Theriault). Along with the Seattle Creative Orchestra concert (see below), this one is perfect for scaring the hell out of your favorite guitar player. On the Boards Studio Theater, 100 W Roy, 447-6144, 8 pm, $10.

FRIDAY JUNE 28

MAGPIE

Sometimes great improvisers just sneak into town. Violinist Mary Oliver and legendary Dutch drummer Han Bennink collaborate with kinetic improvisers Katie Duck, Michael Schumacher, and KT Niehoff. Oliver has premiered works by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Brian Ferneyhough, and Iannis Xenakis, so you can bet her repertory of extended violin technique should match Bennink's flair for the unpredictable. Also June 29 at 8 pm. Velocity MainSpace Theater (second floor), 915 E Pine, 329-6999, 8 pm, $14-$10.

SATURDAY JUNE 29

SEATTLE CREATIVE ORCHESTRA

Noted German guitarist Carsten Radtke blows into town to give the American premiere of Chemins V for guitar and orchestra by Luciano Berio. Berio, whose electro-acoustic masterpiece Visage, proto-plunderphonic Sinfonia, and numerous Sequenzae for solo instruments remain essentials of 20th-century music, took his jaw-dropping Sequenza XI for solo guitar and wrote an accompanying part for orchestra. This concerto-packed program also includes works for guitar and orchestra by Donald Craig, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Michael Nicolella, and Leo Brouwer, whose works, as mandated by federal law, appear in every guitar concert everywhere. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third and Union, 789-3628, 8 pm, $15/$12.

SUNDAY JUNE 30

SEATTLE SYMPHONY

Sure, I'll kvetch about Gerry Schwarz not playing the music of Composer X or Musician Y, but the SSO conductor does conduct Mahler magnificently. The Symphony and Seattle Symphony Chorale perform Mahler's mammoth Symphony No. 2 in C minor "Resurrection." The pre-concert lecture begins one hour prior to performance. Also June 27 at 7:30 pm and June 28 at 8 pm. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St, 215-4747, 2 pm, $71-$11.

MONDAY JULY 1

EST

The slyly acronymed Esbjorn Svensson Trio makes latter-day fusion with an appealing Tony Williams-meets-drum 'n' bass groove. I think everyone has forgotten about EST, the group encounter psychotherapy popular in the 1970s, so the acronym should be okay now. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 8 pm, $16.50/$14.50.

WEDNESDAY JULY 3

ARONOFF CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES

This series is a bargain. Violist Pamela Goldsmith joins a slew of string players for J. S. Bach's Suite No. 3 in C Major, Johannes Brahms' Sextet op. 18, and Quincy Porter's Speed Etude, whose title sounds promising. Bastyr University Chapel, 14500 Juanita Dr NE, Kenmore, 253-474-6922, 7:30 pm, $10-$5.
