THURSDAY OCTOBER 19

MARK OSTROWSKI
Usually seen behind the drum kit lashing out emphatic rhythms for various improvising groups within the Monktail Creative Music Concern, Ostrowski composes music, too. Here, he premieres seven new pieces variously scored in graphic as well as standard notation, including a piece for solo piano performed by Stephen Fandrich and a solo bass clarinet work premiered by Beth Fleenor. Gallery 1412, 1412 18th Ave, 322-1533, 8 pm, $5—$15 sliding scale donation.

HULDRE
A captivating installation of suspended wires and motion-triggered sine tones. Don't miss it. Through Oct 27. Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, 634-0919, 9 am—6 pm, free.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 20

LAKE UNION CIVIC ORCHESTRA
LUCO tackles Bruckner's expansive Symphony No. 7. Pianist George Fiore, best known as the conductor of the Seattle Symphony Chorale, is the soloist in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, dubbed after our current president, "The Emperor." Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave, 652-4255, 7:30 pm, $8/$14.

JIMMY BENNINGTON
Few jazz drummers sound so equally at ease swinging on straight-ahead tunes or delivering a feisty, freely improvised solo set. For his parting gig, the Chicago-bound Bennington teams with Canadian bassist Paul Blaney and violinist Tom Swafford. Gallery 1412, 1412 18th Ave, 322-1533, 8 pm, $5—$15 sliding scale donation.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 21

THE ITALIAN GIRL IN ALGIERS
If you plan to see this Rossini opera buffa, do so tonight. Opera lovers know that a live radio broadcast—in this case, on KING 98.1 FM—tends to bring out the best in singers. Stephanie Blythe, who was superb in last year's Ring cycle, sings the lead role of Isabella. Through Oct 28. McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St, 389-7676, 7:30 pm, $41—$135.

TUDOR CHOIR
This a cappella ensemble sings the Requiem of Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548—1611), a Spanish composer of sometimes static yet always intense vocal music. Preconcert talk at 7 pm. Also Sun Oct 22 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Medina at 3 pm. St Mark's Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave E, 323-9415, 8 pm, $15—$25.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 24

DX ARTS
New electroacoustic music and digital video from the UW's Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media. Best bets on the program include Richard Karpen's Aperture for amplified viola and live electronics, the promisingly titled digital video "Immodesty" by Karolina Sobecka, and Juan Pampin's Nada for viola and live electronics. Meany Theater, UW campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $5/$10.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 25

JAMES WESLEY JOHNSON
My nominee for sleeper gig of the week proffers some of the seminal piano works of the mid and late 20th century: two of Stockhausen's Klavierstücke (VII and the short, masterfully filigreed VIII) and the complete first book of György Ligeti's astounding Études pour Piano. Also on the docket: Toshio Hosokawa's "Haiku" dedicated to Pierre Boulez, and the Tres petites études mélancoliques (1991) of Gérard Pesson, who studied with Ivo Malec. Brechemin Auditorium in the Music Building, UW campus, 685-8384, 2 pm, free.
