It was over before a lot of people even knew it started—the Halcyon, a fairly new all-ages music venue in Edmonds, has officially closed its doors.

"Another all-ages music venue bites the dust," confirms the venue's MySpace page. "I am so sorry to all the bands that have been canceled. And I want to thank everyone who has participated and played at the Halcyon. We had many AMAZING shows. Thank you... we had fun... and we bid you adieu!"

Since opening this past summer, the Halcyon booked many local all-ages scene favorites like Kane Hodder, Sirens Sister (ex-Vendetta Red), and Speaker Speaker, filling the need for an all-ages venue in the North End. The shows were fairly well attended, considering it was a new venue, so things kept moving forward. The upcoming show calendar was also starting to look pretty impressive with Juhu Beach, Claymore, and Patient Patient all holding dates in the books.

But without much warning, the Halcyon announced last weekend that it was over. The bookers were forced to cancel all future shows. Dwayne Cullen, one of three business partners at the Halcyon, says the venue is closing because "our zoning doesn't allow our business, quite simply, and I was told it would. It should have been properly researched."

But while the Halcyon, sadly, might be over, Cullen doesn't plan on leaving the all-ages community anytime soon. "I would love to book for bands or other venues," he said via e-mail early Monday, October 30. "My six months at this place has endowed a great love of the local, under-the-radar scene and I have only gotten a taste. I do plan on pursuing another all-ages venue in the future; how far in the future is not known. I know it is a high demand these days."

Capitol Hill's own improv/experimental space Gallery 1412 also had a recent brush with the threat of closure this past weekend. In hopes of making enough money to stay open, the venue threw together two nights of music and fundraising Saturday and Sunday, October 28 and 29, which featured 1412 supporters Tom Swafford, Gust Burns, Chris Stover, Beth Fleenor, Bob Gallup, and many more.

No one at Gallery 1412 could be reached for official comment at press time (the venue is co-owned by a large group of musicians), but according to one member of the collective, there's still a substantial amount of money that needs to be raised despite this weekend's efforts, and Gallery 1412's future is looking pretty grim.
