As guitarist for Miles Davis's and Tony Williams's paradigm-shifting groups of the 1960s and '70s, and as leader for fusion immortals Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti, John McLaughlin has left his thrillingly rococo six-string calligraphy on more awe-inspiring compositions than most, even in the virtuoso-laden world of jazz. In his new project, the 4th Dimension, McLaughlin still flaunts incredible dexterity and soulful songwriting chops as they pay oblique homage to John Coltrane's transcendent A Love Supreme.
