THURSDAY 2/17

BLANKET TRUTH, OZARKS, DAVIS HOOKER

Tonight, hear beguiling collective Blanket Truth, whose fidelity-impaired pop juxtaposes acoustic and rudimentary electronic elements with inspired left-of-center choices (ukulele, beat-boxing, meowing breakdowns). Similarly ragged Portland performers Ozarks and Davis Hooker round out the bill. Get there early so you can help yourself to the free vegan eats. Healthy Times Fun Club, 8 pm, $5 suggested donation.

SATURDAY 2/19

HAUSU, M WOMEN, BRAINSTORM

Hausu performs with M Women and fellow Portlandites Brainstorm at the Ballard Mine, the studio/performance space where Hausu recently banged out four polished, irresistible jams. Look for a 12-inch due out on Highfives and Handshakes this fall. I anticipate a seriously bright future for these four Reed students, which makes me wonder: How does one simultaneously pull off being a successful undergrad and a celebrated musician (à la Wild Nothing, whose show with Abe Vigoda is later this month at the Vera Project)? I asked, and these are the Habits of Highly Effective Pupils:

"If you're studying electronic-music composition like me, sample your own work and then make pop songs out of them, " says Logan Takahashi of Teengirl Fantasy.

"Start your day listening to DJ Khaled. All I do is win," says Reed Juenger of Beat Connection.

"FAFSA affords you less obligation to work and better equipment," says Ian Judd of Stephanie.

"I'll let you know when I finish writing my thesis," says Michael Avishay of Ghost Animal.

Ballard Mine, 7:30 pm, $5.
