HAUSU, M WOMEN, BRAINSTORM
Hausu performs with M Women and fellow Portlandites Brainstorm at the Ballard Mine, the studio/performance space where Hausu recently banged out four polished, irresistible jams. Look for a 12-inch due out on Highfives and Handshakes this fall. I anticipate a seriously bright future for these four Reed students, which makes me wonder: How does one simultaneously pull off being a successful undergrad and a celebrated musician (à la Wild Nothing, whose show with Abe Vigoda is later this month at the Vera Project)? I asked, and these are the Habits of Highly Effective Pupils:
"If you're studying electronic-music composition like me, sample your own work and then make pop songs out of them, " says Logan Takahashi of Teengirl Fantasy.
"Start your day listening to DJ Khaled. All I do is win," says Reed Juenger of Beat Connection.
