"The Pioneers of New British Funk" runs the tagline on the New Mastersounds' recent CD collection, Masterology. Actually, they're exacting simulators of old American funk. Semantic quibbles aside, the New Mastersounds, like Daptone Records' stable, have replicated with stunning authenticity the warm analog production techniques and sexily torqued instrumental interplay of crucial units like the Meters and the J.B.'s. This is some of the best party music earthlings have yet devised, and these Brits pay homage to their Yank forebears with dazzling fidelity and finesse.
