Berlin-based pianist Nils Frahm can do minimalism and maximalism with equal finesse and beauty. As his Decibel Festival and Substrata 1.1 performances have proved, he’s an incredibly dexterous improviser and crowd-pleaser. Frahm melds impeccable technique with profound emotional heft in his compositions, and his range spans from dewy impressionism to turbulent, hypnotic torrents of chords. He’s also been known to play a piano’s innards to wonderfully percussive effect. Witness a youngish master at work.
