Saw Flag in Austin last November, they were great -- even if the whole punk nostalgia thing is weird and very hit-or-miss. No desire to see Black Flag; Ginn's acted like an utter douchebag and Mike V. has been a caricature of "extreme" since he left a trail of backstabbed and ripped off former skate sponsors and partners for stabs at a spoken word and writing career, pro hockey, pro wrestling, and posting photos of himself beating up kids. And then he fires Ron Reyes and asserts himself the new singer of Black Flag? Ouch.
OFF! and FLAG are the answer...so true! Google up FALG in NYC to see a great live video (super audio as well) of the all alumni band....it kicks total ass. I unfortunately ran across Ginns version of "Black Flag" on the youtube tonight. Ginn ripping the Theremin and Mike V doing his best Rollins act....ugh. I was 13 when I saw Black Flag in a basement in Oregon, and hold those days as what helped shaped me into the person I am....a person who can spot BS Ginn and Mike V push out, but have total admiration for the guys who are only making a great thing even better!
OFF! is pretty amazing too.
The the same thing more worldy older people said about punk rock in the 80s.
"aaaah I remember Davis and Satchmo...THAT was music, not like this bullcrap neonazi strummer punk rock of today!"
