Throwing Muses burst into being with the tumultuous, corkscrewing rock of 1986âs Throwing Muses. Americaâs indie scene hadnât witnessed anything like Kristin Hersh and companyâs cantankerous, beautiful music, which had twisted roots in punk, folk, and prog rock. Hershâs âyoung mother with bipolar disorderâ lyrics also broke new ground. Throwing Muses have gone on to cut several records of thorny, thoughtful greatness. Tanya Donelly (the Breeders and Belly) rejoins the band she cofounded for what should be a bracing reexamination of this distinctive groupâs catalog, including 2013âs Purgatory/Paradise LP.
