Throwing Muses burst into being with the tumultuous, corkscrewing rock of 1986’s Throwing Muses. America’s indie scene hadn’t witnessed anything like Kristin Hersh and company’s cantankerous, beautiful music, which had twisted roots in punk, folk, and prog rock. Hersh’s “young mother with bipolar disorder” lyrics also broke new ground. Throwing Muses have gone on to cut several records of thorny, thoughtful greatness. Tanya Donelly (the Breeders and Belly) rejoins the band she cofounded for what should be a bracing reexamination of this distinctive group’s catalog, including 2013’s Purgatory/Paradise LP.
