Gloria Jones early stuff is amazing, but Gloria Jones wasn't exactly a "Motown powerhouse;" she put out one mid-period (so-so) LP and a few singles on Motown. Her first (and best) LP and early singles were on Uptown, and "Tainted Love" was on Champion. And she wasn't from Motown, she was from Ohio did most of her work in LA before moving to England to sing with Marc Bolan; she was driving the night he died in the car.
Aw, man, I had the Coil version on vinyl... alas, lost in the mists of time at this point, but yes, so powerful, especially more so because sales of the record went to AIDS research...
Sad and heart-wrenching yes, stingbug@4, but all the more powerful for it.
@5.. got a link or a few specific keywords for that? Know the label, perchance? I'd love to check it out.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this! I have wondered (without actually looking into it) who did this cover for 19 years or so. My tiny college radio station had a copy of the single that was misfiled without the sleeve. I stumble upon it when pulling an Ian Dury record or something and played the unknown cover of 'Tainted Love' for kicks. The 12" they had didn't have the band name anywhere on it...nor the label name as I remember it. I spun it often but never knew where to credit it. It's fantastic.

I would say if you want to go scary/uneasy/unsettling with Coil, loop "The Pope Held Upside Down"
