Actually, “Rut” is written from his wife’s perspective as a sufferer of depression and PTSD. A lot of the album’s songs deal with Flowers struggling to help his wife and the effect her illness has had on him and herself.
When you listen to the album with that in mind a lot of the songs actually sound quite tender and “The Man” in particular seems to be even more of a satire in light of the album’s heavy subject matter. As Flowers said, “I now understand that being a man is more about having compassion and empathy.”
