It is worth the trip up to Everett to see A.R. Rahman, who's won Oscars for his film scores.

A.R. Rahman has a career in Bollywood that spans nearly 30 years. courtesy of artist

You know what I'D like to read about? More WOMEN composers being promoted. More WOMEN film directors, producers, writers, etc. Men take up only half of the world's population. It's high time our society recognizes that.

Aishwarya Rai, Charles. I'll fight u.

Great article, gonna check him out. And yes, what auntie said x 2.

in an era of an unprecedented volume of music-making, there is no "Mozart of our Time". good grief.

@2 spunkbutter and @3 Max Solomon: Thank you both and bless you. It is SO frustrating for me as a female composer to keep hearing about men winning all the Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, etc., and the glowing successes of their New York Philharmonic world premieres. My pursuit of film composing has been a steep uphill climb out of obscurity enough without the Hollywood broconomy forever getting rubbed in my face.
@2 spunkbutter: What did you think of my website?

I've been a fan of India's huge film industry for years and am always amazed how at prolific it is, and how complicated the music videos that are an important element in tradition Bollywood movies are. Like the final scene in Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman is the unquestioned king of these schmaltzy videos, and has appeared in or scored thousands of them. The link below is to a video of his that not only looks incredibly unsafe and difficult to shoot, but would simply be impossible to do in this country. And they crank these things out every day. It's quite impressive.

@5 mfg5000: Yeah? Well, I'll boycott it.
As for your 'This is the Mozart of our Times'. Eat my shit and choke on it, Charles, Fuck you and your pathetic broconomy. I'll never read another article of yours again.

Any recs for women doing music in Bollywood? Internet suggests to try Usha Khanna, Sneha Khanwalkar, Saraswati Devi (pre-WW2), Jaddanbai (1892 - 1949). All but the last of whom are streamable soon as I get a chance, sometimes this tech world has its wonders. Will give Rahman and Rai a spin too I must admit...

Griz, where's your site?

(Is it necessary for Charles to choke on shit?
Maybe I'm missing things but if we're all cogs in the sexism machine Charles is not having as much friction as he could (not saying I'm better). Which means some of the correct anger at the machine is addressed to Charles. Sometimes a whole ball of anger comes over. But choking on shit... well it's really a one-time-only move, it's a conversation ender. That the plan?)

@8 Mtn Beaver and Charles Mudede: Please forgive my spewing. I over-reacted out of frustration. I believe my feelings or ire are warranted, however. I have been a composer and musician for over 30 years, am seeking gainful employment in the industry after earning a BA of Music and certification in Film Scoring and Arranging. I am on VA disability and food stamps. While I have been amazingly productive upon the successful completion of my latest and largest orchestral work, plus writing short pieces for flute choir and piano, I haven't been able to earn a sustainable living---let alone get much in the way of recognition. So many men out there winning Oscars, Grammys, Emmys and Tonys. Women since Time immemorial have been poorly represented, drowning in a bottomless abyss of obscurity. It's shameful. Why not promote women composers like me as well?
@7: Do you have an email address so that I can share with you my website?

Seriously, Charles, for me, a struggling artist, your headline "This Composer is the Mozart of Our Times" was the final spit in the eye.
