I'm with you Charles. Winter is my favorite season.

Great essay, Charles — although I did giggle at your use of ‘arctic’ to describe Seattle’s mild winter nights. I too used to have the windows wide open on such nights, drinking in the cool, wet air, the soothing sound of the rain, the feeling of loving to live in such a place. Seattle had a great mix: long Winters of short grey days and long, cool rainy nights, alternating with short Summers of long bright days and short, cool, cloudless nights. Sadly, climate change has ruined the Summers, smothering them under palls of wildfire smoke and domes of brutal heat. Thus lacking in balance, the winter weather no longer appealed to me either, and so I departed.

That's because you're SAD.

@10: Originally, Burlington, VT (yep, home of Bernie) then elsewhere. Burlington’s airport has an exhibit on Substance Use Disorder. This exhibit forthrightly describes how it can lead to homelessness, and how the local community proactively addresses it, in order to prevent homelessness. When a local homeless encampment started sprouting below-code firetrap structures and harboring criminals, the city simply removed it. (See, it is possible…)
