Brian Cook: I thought your brief description of Winnipeg was unfair and inaccurate. Yes it's cold during the winter, but so is Minneapolis - a highly rated city. Also, I am pretty sure Seattle has a higher murder rate than Winnipeg in spite of the reference to Winnipeg's "erratic bouts of violence". The example given of said violence, the beheading, took place on a bus from Edmonton ( a modern city? ) one hour outside of Winnipeg, and the guy who did it was a Chinese schizo who only came to Canada four years ago. You shouldn't slag places by linking them with randomly tragic events. I think anyone who visits Winnipeg, especially in the summer, would find it to be a happy, leafy and laid-back city. If you want harsh and inhospitable, then try visiting the Arctic. Right now it's November in Manitoba and I still have green grass outside my door! Thanks for reading.
@1 hey musicguy. i apologize if i have offended; i was not trying to talk down on your town. i was in Winnipeg in September and found it completely fascinating... and warm. but i did find it strangely violent. there was fresh blood all over the sidewalk outside a club i visited, there was an unrelated stabbing down the street, and the promoter shared stories of a grizzly dismemberment/beheading/castration in an apartment above the club a few years prior. the rest of my statements are based primarily on information relayed from a handful of Manitoban friends and Weakerthans lyrics (see "One Great City!").
in the meantime, check out this trailer for a Winnipeg music scene documentary that hopefully validates some of my statements: http://www.9thavenue.ca/calltoarms/trail…
