In the old days the Stranger was fun and SLOG was party party but now it's just lame. Oh, check out the Suburban Times piece on protest art that my friend Frank is in, starts on page 1
You can't complain about Seattle until you have lived through at least one recession without moving out of town. Seriously, those are words of wisdom from several real life natives who I met at The Cuff (before the dance floor and back was added) and The Brass Connection (don't sit on that sofa!)
I have been here, on and off, since I was ten (1975 Note to young people, I am very, very old). I have lived here full time since I was 22 (1987). I predate The Stranger, and all of my favorite businesses disappeared a long time ago (RIP Frederick & Nelson, That's Atomic, I. Magnin, Andy's Diner, The Marine Room, the Ballard Denny's, Lelani Lanes, Ruby Chow's, Ben Paris, Trader Vic's, the Lake Union St. Vincent de Paul, Perry Ko's South China Sea, The Gold Coin, The Copper Kitchen, The P-I and The Golden Lion).
The rent is indeed atrocious and there's lots of new people, but Seattle doesn't ever really change that much. The Seattle Freeze is only a thing if you are a self-important bore, everyone freaks out when it snows, and we're always in a boom or a bust. There's no middle ground in Seattle.
And every time Charles decides to go on about cars, I go out and buy another vehicle. We're up to five now, including the boat.
Newsflash, the winters here are NOT THAT BAD. Go live in Auckland NZ for a winter. The rain makes everything fresh and green! And the summers here are really something!!!
