The End Is Near

Your Marines recruitment office has moved to a new location: the Endfest summer concert at the Kitsap County fairgrounds. The Marines paid $2,000 to be a sponsor of the August 5 107.7 FM event. At the concert, folks can enlist for their country, mingle with real-life soldiers, and play with a 50-foot inflatable drill instructor. By co-sponsoring the music festival (other sponsors include LifeStyles Condoms and the National Guard), the Marines got their logo on all concert promotions, a link on The End's website, and more importantly, a reserved space to be "where the kids are," says recruitment officer Captain Anthony Cavalli. Healthy Competition

A war between health clubs is heating up in Seattle, and apparently the combatants will stop at nothing to corner the musclehead population. According to former and current employees of World Gym, located in the Washington State Convention & Trade Center, a 24 Hour Fitness employee (24 Hour is opening a new location nearby) recently punched a World Gym security guard. The reported violence occurred when the guard caught the enemy infiltrator passing out 24 Hour Fitness flyers at a World Gym aerobics class. 24 Hour Fitness denies the incident happened. They counter that World Gym was likely responsible for throwing a rock at a window in one of their locations a few months ago. ALLIE HOLLY-GOTTLIEB

Work to Welfare

The number of people riding the welfare revolving door (welfare recipients who join the workforce only to return to the rolls) has risen 14 percent in the past three years, according to a recent report by the state Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee. People who were off welfare for at least one of the past 24 months and then returned now make up 72 percent of the statewide caseload-- as opposed to 1997's 58 percent. A spokesperson for the Washington State Institute for Public Policy did not have an explanation for the trend, but said they are evaluating it. AMY JENNIGES

Monorail Ga-Ga!

If the monorail debate has you all riled up and you're wondering what you can possibly do, we suggest this: Go to www.riseaboveitall.org, print out a petition for Initiative 53--which would provide funding for a complete feasibility study for a citywide monorail plan--and collect signatures. You should also attend the 6:00 p.m. monorail hearing on Thursday July 27 at City Hall. EDS.
