Society Must Be Defended

Le Boucher/Ravenna/Fri Feb 7/10:20 pm: Officer Digalis, who responded to and investigated a harassment call at a health food store, composed this report: "When I arrived at the grocery, I talked to the victim and a witness. They related the following: The victim is in charge of the cheeses for the store. The witness is the Human Resources Director. The suspect was the store's butcher. The victim and suspect worked together for about one year. During this time, the suspect frequently made racist comments toward the victim, who is originally from India. After returning from a vacation recently, the victim was asked by the suspect if he had gone to Florida to get his pilot's license. Whenever a non-white person came into the store, the butcher would say that the person was one of the victim's 'fucking relatives.' The butcher referred to the victim as a 'punk.' The butcher was also in the habit of banging large meat trays on the floor behind the victim to startle him.

"When the victim found a chunk of raw meat under the plastic wrap that he uses to wrap cheese, he informed the witness (the Human Resources Director), who then fired the butcher. [Evidently, public health risks, and not racist comments, determined the witness' final limit.]

"Last night, as the victim walked to his car after work, he spotted the suspect sitting in a vehicle across from the [market], facing southbound. It was 10:20 pm. The victim got in his vehicle and left northbound. The suspect made a U-turn and began following the victim. The victim drove around the block and the suspect followed. The victim went back into the market. The suspect circled the block three more times and then parked behind some shrubbery. The suspect waited several more minutes and then left.

"On the same night, between 11:00 pm and 11:40 pm, the store manager's vehicle tires were slashed. The manager suspected the former butcher and reported the incident.... Officer McAuliffe and I went to the suspect's apartment. His vehicle was there but he did not answer the door."

Le Degré Zéro/Northgate Mall/Fri Feb 7/4:30 pm: This afternoon, a security officer for the Bon Marché located at Northgate Mall was doing a perimeter check of the building when he observed two adult males of Middle Eastern descent taking pictures of the Bon's entrance area and the side of the building. The suspects were looking around and acting nervous.

When the security officer made eye contact with the nervous suspects, they stopped what they were doing, entered a vehicle (a blue Toyota Supra), and left the area.

Later, the security officer handed the reporting officer, Officer Cook, a videotape of the incident, a copy of which was forwarded to the SPD's Emergency Preparedness Bureau.
