The Boy Scouts should recruit homosexuals to serve as Scout Masters. Rob has shown that there is ZERO% chance a homosexual will molest a teenage boy.
I wonder if Portland Mayor Sammy Adams has any time available?

@1: Thank you for sharing your opinion, Mrs. DePoint.

as an eagle scout, i'm very disappointed w/ the boy scouts of america.

and what makes the boy scouts so hypocritical is that they very publicly wouldn't let an adult lead a troop because he was gay.

isn't all this stuff (including the catholic church) really a criminal conspiracy to rape children? what if they were selling drugs instead? isn't it the same thing?
4
@3 No, raping children is WAY worse than selling drugs.
5
To be fair, as long as you stay out of the Mormon-run parts of the BSA, you're pretty much OK. 'swhat this Eagle did.
6
@3 Coming from a family with a Scoutmaster, eagle scout, and boy scouts, I too am disappointed with the BSA. The program can and has done good things for lots of youth.

Although Baden-Powell was a Christian, there was no promise to keep morally straight in the original Oath. It's a shame to see that a later addition so wrapped up in Christian "values" has such an influence over the institution.

Statistics prove Australians are safer in strip clubs than church (via arbroath blogspot com)

They may be holy places of worship and reflection, but new figures show you may not be as safe in a NSW church as you are at a strip club or in a brothel. The latest data, compiled by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, showed 1600 people were charged with committing a range of 27 offenses in the state's "places of worship'' in 2008. Surprisingly, the figures showed only 282 people were charged in premises classified as adult entertainment over the same offenses.

Bureau director Don Wedderburn said the data showed people were just as likely to be assaulted or robbed in the sanctity of a church as they were on the streets. "Most people would think of churches and synagogues as sanctuaries in society,'' he said. "But maybe that's naive, because the statistics show they are likely to rob, assault or steal from people there like anywhere else. The figures are genuinely surprising.''

A breakdown of the figures showed that 85 people were assaulted in places of worship, compared to 66 at an adult entertainment premises. According to the report, places of worship include churches, synagogues, monasteries, mosques, convents, cathedrals and chapels. Premises listed under adult entertainment included strip clubs, sex shops, brothels, massage parlours, homosexual clubs, gaming houses as well as gambling clubs.

Places of worship were also ahead on sexual offenses (16), theft from motor vehicles (33), resisting arrest (seven) and liquor offenses (10). Harassment and threatening behaviour at places of worship (30) was more than double that of adult entertainment (13). Two people were charged with possessing or using marijuana in places of worship.

can all the folks who win millions in sexual abuse trials share it with the millions of people who have been sexual abused who have never gotten a penny? p.s. financial penalties are fine but they are not a deterrent.

@5: Mormons weren't anywhere near the assistant scoutmaster in my troop.

And having files from back in 1965 released makes me wonder if I'd find his name in there.
10
Didn't 60 Minutes do a story about how the BSA has essentially been annexed into the Mormon church? I think they kinda run that organization now administratively and otherwise. It's a big reason why they are so vehemently against allowing gay boys into scouting.
11
Sorry Bauhaus, but gay boys are welcomed. Just not gay over-18 leaders.

And does everyone here think any allegation of abuse should be loudly trumpeted everywhere? That's a big reason why men avoid teaching, because one claim by a 15yr-old tart and everyone assumes he's guilty. Why take the chance?
12
Alleged @11, Except gay boys aren't welcome. Allowed? Yes. Welcome? No. I am an Eagle Scout and I can tell you unequivocally that the BSA is an exclusive organization. Anyone not fitting their ideal was subjected to endless ridicule by both boys and leaders. At least the leaders of my troop never raped any of us.

I was a boy scout and it was a great experience. No sexual predators in my troop. Before we go blaming the exclusion of gays for this report keep in mind that the BSA only outlawed gays in the last 10 years. This one happened in the 80's. Obviously pedophilia is wrong and I certainly believe that keeping gays out of the BSA is wrong too but one did not cause the other in this case.
14
I'm quite sure Bill Donahue is happy any time a child is raped.

I grew up in cub scouts and boy scouts and eventually got eagle. One thing I discovered is, because of the controversy in the 80's and then because of the controversy in the Catholic church boyscout police on protecting kids is some of the best. Their are lots of rules about the ratios between adults and kids at any one time so that adults can police other adults and kids outnumber the adults that they are with. That said they are not always followed.

Oh, and I absolutely hate the homophobia built into boy scouts, homophobia that tends to radiate out of it's hubs in Texas and salt lake city, and I hate the fact that I have to defend my involvement in a group that has done so much good for both it's members and the community.
