Aw, shit. Where's the link, Dan? I wanted to see what Voinovich did.
2
Too bad that it didn't go through congress, because going through the courts will be messy. Years and years of appeals and other judiciary crap.

Ironically enough, my battalion is doing sensitivity training this afternoon.

3
Here's hoping they all have a very Merry Christmas
4
I'm so disgusted. When will the democrats start criticizing the republicans hypocritical actions on the military?
5
Nothing is more important than tax cuts for the rich, which is why they are blocking EVERYTHING until the tax cut bill is passed. This is the start, they'll shut the government down over this.
6
What we get from our current (until Jan.) Democratic majorities -- Republican-lite tax compromise, no DADT repeal, and no START Treaty.

And we all voted for these people...why, I've forgotten.
7
Oh and fuck HRC.

They promised us we'd have repeal this year -- you know, "The Plan".

They also promised us we'd see progress on DOMA and ENDA.

Why does Joe Solomonese still have a job?
8
@5: meh, I'm all right with the government getting shut down by the GOP at this point. Either that will force people to realize that Republicans have only their own interests in mind, or there will be mass chaos, anarchy, and bloodshed. At this point, either seems like a decent alternative to the agonizingly slow death of our country.
9
Wait, I'm confused?

This is considered failed? Why would would there be the assumption that a filibuster would occur with this particular legislation? Would the republican's dare filibuster this and risk losing any momentum on renewing the Bush tax cuts?
10
I've never expected this from congress. The courts are the only institution with the courage for a repeal.
11
@8 Since when have actions by Republicans that shut down the government caused the people to realize anything? Anyone who supports the Republican party has their head so far up their own ass that they'll break their spine trying to pull it out. They'll just snuggle in a little deeper and blame illegal immigrants or something.
13
I want names:

Who voted it down?
14
And people wonder why we grow so jaded about our Government. This week has been a prime example.
15
@13, if the fucker has an (R) after their name (Susan Collins honorably excepted) or is Joe Manchin (Democrat, West Virginia), then they voted to continue to oppress soldiers who put their lives on the line for a country that spits on them daily.

The Democrats are spineless, but the Republicans are swine, let's not forget.
16
Who do I call to ask about dropping it in the court?
17
I quit. I am so sad and so fucking frustrated. I can't even bother to bitch about the hypocrisy.

Maybe a little. The *sshole Republicans won't support gay marriage because "the will of the people" (i.e. polls) is against it. But the majority of the nation, servicemen and the fucking PENTAGON support repeal. Where is the will of the people now?

I never insult Republicans as a whole and I never judge a group of people by their loudest and most obnoxious members. But I am so damn angry and frustrated. I always believed that being a liberal meant accepting everyone, including people I disagreed with. Well, screw that! I'm done! I quit! If they won't play nice, it only makes me look like a fool when I do.

Assholes.

Sorry for the swears.
18
Our good buddy the back stabbing Democrat Blanche Lincoln didn’t even VOTE! NO SHOW!
19
The US Senate: Where winning by 17 points is a loss.
20
I hope John McBigot dies a painful death. SOON. Along with Mitch McAsshole and Scott BrownThis. Fuck 'em all. Every goddamned one of them. And Obama too. He never really did jack shit about this. Not a goddamned thing but empty promises. I can't really pin any hopes on the judiciary.
21
"Reporters in the gallery watched closely for Lincoln, who ultimately arrived a considerable time after the vote ended. "I would like to have been recorded as voting yes," she said to a largely empty chamber. Lincoln, whose two-term career ends at the end of this session, was told that the rules do not allow such a revision. "Had I been here I would have voted yes," she said. (Lieberman said after the vote that Lincoln was in the dental chair as the vote was taking place."

@8

Well I have family that works for the federal government, they would go on an un-paid holiday for several weeks/months. All parks would be closed, no ATF background checks, all other legislation would grind to a halt until a budget is passed. So no DADT repeal, no Tax cuts, no Arms Reduction Treaty, etc, etc.

The only benefit was the last time this happened, it propelled approval ratings for Bill Clinton. Its a toss up to weather it provides a boost for Obama, he's basically taking a hit right now for the tax cut compromise.
23
It's like I said, President Obama sold out you with his "deal".

The funny thing is the President could just defund prosecutions and pardon any "convicted" of crimes under the UCMJ if he wanted to.

But you're his bitches. And he sold you out ... for NOTHING.

NADA.

Other than giving away your middle class tax dollars to his Billionaire and Millionaire friends.

Get used to it.
24
@5 for the insightful win.

Squeal, piggies, it's the slaughterhouse for you.
25
& yet somehow the Dems won't manage to spin this as the Republicans not supporting the troops because... because... fuck, I don't even know why, I just know they won't. Can someone helpe me out here?
26
Almost immediately after the DADT vote failed, Good As You tweeted that Lieberman is planning to bring an standalone vote on DADT later on & that Reid is expediting that (and Leiberman's twitter acct confirmed). I just don't know what to think at this point :-P
27
Republicans patriotically voted to keep our troops out of harm's way of those icky showers. Also, adding 600 billion to the deficit is okay if it further reduces the tax burden of those job creatin' innovatin' millionares & billionares. I mean, look at all those jobs that resulted from the Bush tax cuts! But good lord, where are they going to find the 7 billion to pay for medical care for the 9/11 1st responders who are sick and dying from exposure to deadly toxins? Never forget!
28
@17: there is no reason to apologize for swearing at/about these asswipes. Being a liberal should mean being accepting of everybody, but there will always be people who trample all over that level of acceptance. Those people MUST be opposed at all costs, or we get situations like we are seeing in Congress today, or in Amsterdam recently. One should never accept as valid an ideology that will allow no compromise; it is the worst form of intellectual cancer society has to face.
29
We all know Republicans are worthless pieces of shit, how is this news?
30
BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
31
Dan, you whiny little prick.
The GOP shoving this up your ass IS legislating from the legislature....

The truth is that the Republicans DON'T respect or honor the troops, or the military in general, if the GWB Admin. is any guide. Remember Mr. Rumsfeld's sad and deadly attempt to do war on the cheap in Iraq? Remember the severe shortage of body armor over there? Remember the deplorable conditions at Walter Reed? Republicans think of our troops as nothing more than raw meat for the grinder, and that's shameful.
34
I don't know what to say. Shit. I'm so sorry. The injustice turns my stomach and depresses me. They ignore the American public, they ignore the majority of our troops, they ignore the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, they ignore the Secretary of Defense, they ignore the President and I'd like to box all of their ears, especially McCain for obvious reasons, and Brown for saying that he'd vote in favor.

I guess the only option I have is to thank my own Senators for having the integrity to vote for justice and equality. And, once again I'm embarrassed to be an American. Good thing nothing humans ever do lasts forever.
35
Hell yeah! Praise Jeebus that sense has prevailed and this great country is standing firm with all the great military powers and beacons of democracy which ban gay & lesbians from serving openly. Countries like Bangladesh, China, Cuba, Fiji, Iran, Kenya, North Korea, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Countries we’re proud to call friends and fellow travelers on this important issue.

If this repeal had passed, we would have ended up like those tinpot dictatorships, failed states and military nobodies like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, and the UK. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!

Please wait...
