Come now, this is Seattle... we've never found an unfunded policy we didn't support. More gondolas to downtown!
How many bike tabs do you think it would take for Seattle to raise $20 million a year ? $200 bike tabs or should we just put bike cops on hard-core Mudede-type revenue raising missions?
Fucking with cyclists gets the attention of this town's Bike Mafia. Rest assured, Rasmussen et al will be partners in some downtown firm after the upcoming election.
I like the bike signals. I saw something similar in Paris and it seemed to work well. There the bikes would tend to filter up through traffic and bunch near the light. It would change for the bikes first giving them a moment in the intersection and then it would change for autos.
I think the signals there for bikes had just red and green and were a bit smaller than the signals we put in, but the same basic idea.
The motorbikes also filtered up which was pretty amusing. They'd work their way up between the cars and then race ahead just as the light changed.
I got pulled over and cited by a motorcycle cop last Friday on 2nd Avenue for not using hand signals while changing lanes (even though I'm not required to in situations where it's unsafe to ride with one hand). This was two hours before the Sher Kung memorial ride. I think that's a pretty good indication of where our city's priorities are when it comes to cyclists. They don't give a fuck.
#14, done in a second. AWV tunnel, over and done with. I'll retrofit the thing since it was built above and beyond the standards of the 40's and as such is in much better condition than the corporatists want you think.
Do I get to spend all the rest of the money I saved too?
the fact remains that the city's budget is tight. Asking those who ride bikes to contribute to the actual construction and maintenance of bike only lanes seems only logical - unless you have an issue with people paying for services that they want and use.
Bike registration now! Let that money pay for the dozen or so things you think you need to create the illusion of safety. Or have the money pay for mass transit, or potholes, or daycare, etc, etc.
As much as The Stranger hates it, ed murray is actually doing a good job in regards to cycling advocacy. He's a proven to be a smart politician in that he doesn't publicly take any position on cycling which people could use against him down the road. All the while he's been quietly doing things like helping bikeshare get launched, brokering a deal for the westlake cycletrack (that both sides seem to be happy with which is a fucking miracle, politically speaking), and implementing the 2nd ave cycletrack way ahead of schedule.
Who gives a fuck what he says publicly so long as things keep getting done? Mcginn said SO MUCH publicly and very little got done. I voted for mcginn but seeing the progress I'm glad murray won.
@25, nope just a guy who bikes to work everyday and appreciates when things actually get done as opposed to all the 4-year stalemate that happened during the mcginn years. and again i voted for mcginn but murray is getting shit done.
@24, So if the region doesn't support expansion of funding right of way public transportation, will Murray get off His "regionalism" mantra (in the case of public transportation) and try to work for a funding solution within the city?
@27 I don't know I'm not a psychic. What I do know is that he's done a decent job on cycling issues since he's taken office which was the tenor of my original comment as well as the topic of this article. I never said he was perfect on every single issue facing the city and the region.
@26: Four year stalemate? Off the top of my head I can list the Nickerson Street road diet, the Ship Canal Trail extension, the Linden Ave cycletrack, the NE 125th road diet, the Dexter bike lanes and the Greenwood bike lanes as major bike infrastructure improvements during the McGinn administration. I'm sure there are many more, but these are the ones I ride regularly.
It didn't help that right wing radio and the Seattle Times regularly mocked McGinn for being a cyclist. McGinn touting achievements for bicyclists was like Obama praising civil rights--the right wing backlash was immediate and dismissive.
Where does Ed Murray stand on the Ballard Missing Link? Last I heard he opposed it.
Keep in mind that the reason Murray gets traction on this while McGinn didn't has nothing to do with their merit as individuals and everything to do with political games. The Times and the City Council decided to make McGinn a one-term mayor by attacking anything he attempted to do on bikes (and other issues). Murray does the same things McGinn did, at least in terms of backing a 2nd Ave Cycletrack, and it's fine because he has the broader political backing of the Times and the City Council.
Ed Murray was AWOL on transit and bike/ped funding in the state legislature, so while it's cheap and easy to put down some paint and plastic lane markers, he failed to deliver the funding Seattle needs to pay for a bike master plan or to expand buses and trains.
@30 you're right it has nothing to do with them as people, Mcginn was a good dude. It has everything to do with their reputations as politicians. So far Murray has been smart by staying quiet of divisive political issues (while working on them behind the scenes) whereas mcginn shouted his views from the mountain tops which made him enemies with the assholes at the seattle times. Mcginn's lack of political skill caused that, he wasn't some innocent victim that the times editorial board just decided to pick on. He entered into the ring looking for a fight and even though I agreed with his cause 100%, that's not a good way to actually get shit done.
@31- Your comment makes sense when you change "lack of political skill" to "honesty" and "staying quiet on divisive issues (while working on them behind the scenes)" to "doing as little as possible on divisive issues."
I'm still red hot pissed off about this. Hang them fucking high - boot in the ass out the door at the next election.

Sooner or later they will need to start paying their own way.

Ah, the old gas tax myth troll. Good one.
So DOUG., how big was your involuntary contribution to the boys in blue ?
Dominic, look at the budget, you chose what to cut by $20 million a year, or propose a tax increase.
Do I get to spend all the rest of the money I saved too?
I did not say anything about a gas tax.
your meme is fail.

another bike riding douchebag asshole who doesnt think the rules of the road apply to him.
your the kind of guy who deserves a brush with a truck fender.
What I wanna know is when the goddamn pedestrians are going to start paying for their goddamn sidewalks. Why are they so afraid of paying shoe tabs!?
Good luck.
What exactly have drivers contributed to the construction and maintenance of 2nd Avenue that bicyclists haven't contributed?
Weird how tight your budget gets when you're shoveling a billion dollars into a hole in the ground.
