The coast guard finally gets something to do with its gunboats besides shadowing ferries! These yutzes should be glad they won't be as, um, proactive as the French were in dealing with this sort of nonsense.
Here's one person coming from Bellingham to join the resistance. Many other friends and community groups from Whatcom will be coming as well. Shell must be held accountable for their disregard for human and non-human life.
The federal government conservatively estimated 75% chance of an oil spill in the Arctic. And we have five times the amount of known carbon reserves we can burn already and keep the planet from spiraling into 2 degree Celcius+ warming chaos- why in God's name is Shell looking for new sources in the most dangerous, remote, and fragile regions? Greed and arrogance.
Maybe something positive can come out of this. Maybe the port can donate the money it makes to the homeless. Or use it to fix up some of their vast holdings down on Harbor Island for homeless encampments. You know, give back.
On a personal note, I can't bitch about oil drilling because I use oil. :/

Shell doesn't give a fuck about knit-hat beardies doing Fairhaven "degrees" and their plastic boats.
How will these knit hat knuckleheads get from Bellingham? Ride their bikes, take the bus (fossil fuel burning also) or all ride together in a V.W. bus? Stay in Bellingham and invent some kind of solar power that will replace all of our needs for fossil fuel then you will be wealthy and you won't give a shit about Shell.
The "First Amendment Zone" established for protesters of a multinational corporation along with the stern warnings of jail time and fines seems incredibly Orwellian to me. Regardless of how you feel about the protests, that's pretty creepy.

No, seriously, I want in on this cigar action.
