The legislative declaration of the 1971 makes for some good reading in light of this embattled Port Commission's questionable meeting practices:

The legislature finds and declares that all public commissions, boards, councils, committees, subcommittees, departments, divisions, offices, and all other public agencies of this state and subdivisions thereof exist to aid in the conduct of the people's business. It is the intent of this chapter that their actions be taken openly and that their deliberations be conducted openly.

The people of this state do not yield their sovereignty to the agencies which serve them. The people, in delegating authority, do not give their public servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to know. The people insist on remaining informed so that they may retain control over the instruments they have created.

[1971 ex.s. c 250 § 1.]

Write and demand Port Commissioners, Foss and Shell disclose to the public the exact $ or number of jobs this deal is supposed to bring to our state. Then we can do cost and benefit analysis, compare the number of jobs and money gained from the ones that will be lost in other industries - fisheries, agriculture, tourism, recreation + + +, and the costs from the 75% likelihood of a devastating oil spill - extinctions, food web collapse, poisoned water and air, deaths and injuries etc.. Otherwise, it will be like the deal with Boeing where we give up hundreds of millions and lose the jobs anyway two years later. If the Port didn't do their due diligence and consider ALL cost factors because of personal bias or political considerations, then they need to be held accountable. What they are doing is acting without oversight and presuming that the people of Seattle are like like children who don't need to be involved in the decisions made for us. Do they even know if Shell and Foss are telling the about the benefits and impacts? Did they consult any impartial experts/professionals/analysts/scientists, or did they only looked at Shell and Foss' claims? We have no idea. Why all the secrecy?

Wow, looking through the documents about the other resolution O'Brien put forward today, apparently the committee voted and failed the Murray-introduced resolution that Race and Social equality are a key foundation for the city's comprehensive plan. Such level-headedness in that committee today.

"A RESOLUTION confirming that the City of Seattle’s core value of race and social equity is one of the foundations on which the Comprehensive Plan is built."

i looked at that jar and i thought: "last polar bear" is a lame name for a weed strain.

Sounds like they are calling a bluff? Running out the clock? Doubting collective potential?

You hear that kayacktivists? They don't think you or the mayor has the oars to stop an arctic drilling rig.

Ignorance and Hyperbole are the activist friends. If there is a 75 percent chance ( or 3 of 4 oil rigs) of a devastating Oil spill our seas and oceans would be flooded with nothing but the stench of crude oil and dead animals.
Port authorities are designed to create economic opportunity. Meaning the port must work and act as if they are a for profit business ( That is why we voted for the Port Authority ). Negotiations and other sensitive information should not be discussed in an open forum. This action would give the people they're negotiating with an unfair advantage.
I question if the city of Seattle has any authority over the Port of Seattle. In my opinion Seattle is playing politics, placating the activists when they know they have no standing in this fight
The Arctic fleet will dock some place. Why not let Seattle enjoy the economic benefit? The jobs created are "Livable wage jobs" (Another buzz phrase I've heard lately)
It's time to stop listening the the 1 percent activist groups. If the Activists trespass and break the law they should be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. In addition Any cost directly or indirectly caused by their actions should be paid for by the activists groups. Civil lawsuits if necessary!

@6 our seas (and rivers) ARE flooded with oil spills and dead animals.

Mitten, can you complete your thought? What do you mean "our seas (and rivers) ARE flooded with oil spills and dead animals."

Please wait...
