UH OH, the economy must be about to tank; whenever improvements and dream projects reach this far into the CD, it means the economy is about to collapse. The CD, a great, vibrant part of Seattle history ALWAYS gets the short end of the rich white folk stick. Yup, economy is about to go down....BESIDES, Vulcan's Yesler Terrace insta uber dense neighborhood is going to get all the good concrete and rebar, if you know what I mean.

this is Wyking Garrett's chance to show that Africatown has their shit together and that he can control his Father. Good luck.

Very low income people won't be welcome as residents in this project because, let's face it, the movers and shakers think the are just as bad for business at this location as they are in SLU.
4
@3 you got that right. Welcome to Seattle--poor fucks stay the shit out!

In the eighties the CD was a place to get some late-night, take-out crack. Ah, the good old days. When will the Stranger quit fetishizing the CD? It's been in a state of change since its inception and no one "owns" it.

These apartments are for people making 40% to 80% median income? 80% median is $72,000/yr. What a crock.

@7

80% of median household income in Seattle is $72k. 40% is 36k.

80% of median non-family income in Seattle is $44k. 40% is $22k.

80% of median per capita income in Seattle is $40k. 40% is $20k.

An individual earning Seattle's current minimum wage of $12, working full time with two weeks vacation, has an income of $24k

Personally, I'm in favor of plain old public housing, and I'm dubious of any scheme that mandates some percentage of new units be "affordable" by one definition or the other.

But with that said, it doesn't look to me like anyone in the city is trying to hand affordable housing over to the hated Young Technology Professionals.

But will Ms. Helen have a restaurant there?

@10:

Which is precisely why municipalities implement zoning ordinances and land-use policies; otherwise developers would completely fuck over everyone in the vicinity of their projects - because CAPITALISM.

@5 Fetishising the "old" CD is a relatively new thing for the Stranger.

For instance, back when the SW corner of 23rd and Union was a muddy hole in the ground surrounded by a chain link fence, the Stranger was essentially crying out for someone to develop the area: http://www.thestranger.com/slog/archives….

Now that it's actually happened, the Stranger apparently wants things to go back to the way they were.

Please wait...
