No real surprise here considering the pair's shared history fighting the cars-only bottomless money-sucking sinkhole downtown tunnel: Former Mayor Mike McGinn has endorsed Cary Moon for mayor.
Here's what McGinn had to say today:
She is a person of great integrity, intelligence and vision. She’s not someone who has been climbing the political ladder - her work has always been dedicated to the common good.
I expect her administration will be open, inclusive, and driven by ideas, because that is how she has always operated.
I’ve also had the opportunity to observe both Cary Moon and Jenny Durkan at multiple forums and events over the last few months. Cary Moon is prepared to make fundamental changes to who pays for growth and who benefits, with innovative ideas on tax reform and housing affordability. In contrast, not once did I hear Jenny Durkan champion a policy idea that would challenge the big businesses and wealthy individuals financing her campaign.
The Sierra Club activist turned mayor lost his seat to Ed Murray in 2013 and attempted a comeback this year, running against Moon and four other serious contenders after Murray dropped out due to allegations of sexual abuse. McGinn's effort failed spectacularly this year, earning him just 6.5 percent of the vote, the least among the six frontrunners. But McGinn holds sway among his set of die-hard fans and made a name for himself as an outsider mayor unafraid of open conflict with the powers that be. Moon, an engineer who founded the People’s Waterfront Coalition during the tunnel fight, is running on a similar promise.
McGinn is the first of the unsuccessful front runners to endorse, though Nikkita Oliver has said she will vote for Moon. Moon won 17.6 percent of the vote behind former U.S. attorney Jenny Durkan's 27.9 percent. The general election is November 7.
