Awesome!

I was one of Heidi Groover's "nobodies and also-rans" who applied to fill Burgess's seat. I did it for the experience, and it was fun. I sat next to Kirsten Tuesday night at the community forum and spoke with her again on Wednesday before addressing the council. She seems great. Super-smart and motivated, and she worked hard for this appointment.

I'm glad the Council didn't just automatically appoint Licata (who I also like). And even though the common talking point around town seemed to be that this process was "a waste of time," Seattle is better off for taking the time to find a fresh new voice for city government.

Congratulations, Kirsten!

DOUG should have won!

Vote DOUG, 2017!
4
Nick Licata should have been appointed. No matter how smart she is, there's no way Harris-Talley can get up to speed on the complex budget process in such a short time. Such a sad missed opportunity! Licata was by far the best choice.
5
Nikkita Lite--and I'm damn glad we've got her.

@6 - I'd call this absurdist political theater... but it's just too boring.
8
@6, Slog commenters do not get paid by the word, you know.

9
@6: Nikita, is that you?
10
@6 is likely Tsimerman himself.
11
Oh, that's definitely Alex. I've heard him enough times to know. Plus, nobody else in the city calls The Bertha Knight Landis Room "The Bertha Room". And nobody else cares about that dumb idea to open it up to every crackpot and nutcase in town so that they can listen to themselves talk,

12
Oops, that should be "Landes" not "Landis". Mrs. Vel-DuRay apologizes for the error.
14
@11 & 12. @6 is not Alex Tsimerman, it's Tiniell Cato...a different thorn in the side of the city council.

@2 & @3....THANKS!!!

Very surprised and happy that Kristen was chosen. This is a breakthrough for the disenfranchised in the city.
16
Licata was the clearly the most experienced choice, and since he wasn't chosen, we all get to see what failure looks like. (This failure, and the utter waste of time and effort which produced it, was a perfect embodiment of the "Seattle process" critique.)

...there's no way Harris-Talley can get up to speed on the complex budget process in such a short time.

That is why they chose her. Licata was an independent, sharp, and experienced voice of integrity. She will not have the time to do anything but what they tell her -- and if she refuses, they'll cite her inexperience and their lack of time to ignore her.

This is a breakthrough for the disenfranchised in the city.

Nope. See above.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Kirsten. She is smart and talented and a great catch for the people of Seattle. Hope to see more of her in public office in the future.

Licata is the commune-living oaf who led Seattle politics down the garden path of liberal stupidities. Governance by feeling, and leadership by sentiment has made us a supple, whiney, entitled populace with a seriously infected civic culture. The City's expenditures have increase 40% over just 5 years, with boondoggle programs all over bureaucracy. When this comes to a halt -- and it will be abrupt -- Hold on tight, because Seattle is going to flush people and slash budgets.

Licata is the commune-living oaf who led Seattle politics down the garden path of liberal stupidities.

Examples of his bad leadership would include...?

The City's expenditures have increase 40% over just 5 years,

And what has happened to Seattle's population size in that time?

When this comes to a halt -- and it will be abrupt -- Hold on tight, because Seattle is going to flush people and slash budgets.

Ah, yes -- gazing to the near future when the looming dystopia borne of liberal policies will finally arrive. That it never actually does arrive just means it's coming ever closer -- mark my words!

(Previous earth-shattering disasters from foolish liberal policies include the high minimum wage causing the collapse of the economy, and gay marriage causing the end of civilization. We're still waiting on both.)

If anyone is whiney it is the followers of the status quo who whine about anything new that might threaten their privileged lives and enhance the unprivileged.

Stop the sweeps and stop police brutality.

Stop the sweeps and stop police brutality.

Our new two-month council appointee with no experience and no constituency will get right on it, no doubt.

Stop off-topic commentary!

"Stop the homeless sweeps" is the cry of the virulent Left. What better way to tweak the noses of taxpayers and residents than by forcing them to see (and smell) these losers who refuse City services.
24
#23 Does it make you feel better to trash people that are down and out? Somehow you lost your ability to see people as human beings.
25
Somehow you lost your ability to see people as human beings.

Filthy, crime-ridden encampments befouling our shared public spaces are no way for human beings to allow other human to live. Somehow you've lost your ability to see that.
26
#25 So you can’t see that the sweeps and lack of Housing First are contributing to that? Does forcing people to move to the streets help the situation? The lack of inexpensive housing contributing to this? What’s your problem?

27
So you can’t see that the sweeps and lack of Housing First are contributing to that?

The sweeps are protecting our common public spaces from appropriation, and reducing the opportunities for criminal activity. That's the purpose of the sweeps, to maintain our communal standards contained in our laws. Nothing you've ever said has about the sweeps has even come close to recognizing this simple reality.

Does forcing people to move to the streets help the situation?

The encampments you're defending are already on the streets: along Airport Way, South Spokane Street, and First Avenue South, just to name three I have personally seen recently.

What’s your problem?

That you've personally attacked anyone who disagrees with you, without ever once explaining how filthy and crime-ridden encampments in our shared public spaces help us to end homelessness. How does it work? That's a serious question, and no, I don't expect anything other than more verbal abuse from you as an answer.
28
I am defending people who have/are being abused by this economic system and you think it is ok to insult them from your comfy bubble. There is a way to end homelessness and that is to enact the Housing First program citywide which has been very successful in other cities. The city sweeps are brutal and drive people to other parts of the streets and deprive people of the little comforts they have it also kills people. People in those encampments typically have nowhere else to go and through economic devastation or mental illness or/and addiction have lost everything. Some are workers who cannot earn enough to pay for a place to live. You want me to give you all the answers. You are being unreasonable and defensive and you apparently have no compassion for those that are victims of the bankers and wall street.
29
I am defending people who have/are being abused by this economic system...

You're defending the appropriation of our shared public spaces, and for what benefit?

...you think it is ok to insult them from your comfy bubble.

Thank you for validating my prediction of verbal abuse. At least you're trying to answer:

There is a way to end homelessness and that is to enact the Housing First program citywide which has been very successful in other cities.

Then I'm all for it. Considering the amount of money we've thrown at this problem to obtain our current results, getting better results for better or less money sounds like a great deal. (We're still not allowing filthy and crime-ridden encampments in our shared public spaces.)

You want me to give you all the answers.

You justified smearing Mayor Murray because of his ordering the sweeps. If you're going to behave that way, you'd better expect some harsh questioning in return.

...no compassion for those that are victims of the bankers and wall street.

How about if I have compassion for all of the bicyclists whose eco-friendly forms of transport were stolen and chopped up in some of those encampments? Would that work for you?

I guess that is SSicKKKattleites' way of telling anybody with ANY Negroid ancestry to suck it up?? ( the relentless SSnubbing of issues that have disproportionately affect Black Africans "living" in the Emerald City over the GENERATIONS . . . .)

Please wait...
