The Alliance for Gun Responsibility announced a ballot measure to raise the purchase age for semi-automatic weapons to 21
Hmmm... ok, maybe there's a chance this could pass if...

Along with raising the purchase age, the initiative would also establish a waiting period of up to 10 days for "assault weapon" purchases, expand background checks, require people who buy semi-automatic weapons to show they have completed a safety training in the last five years, require notification to gun buyers that owning a gun increases the risk of injury, suicide, domestic violence, and homicide, and hold "gun owners responsible if a child or other prohibited person accesses and uses an unsafely stored firearm to harm themselves or another person."
Ok nevermind, it's dead in the water.

the waiting period should be 6 months (or longer). 3 days is a joke, but 10 days is still a joke.

@2. Why should it be 6 months?
4
@3: why should it be 3 days?

@1- unfortunately, agreed. If gun reform is going to happen by initiative, it'll have to be piecemeal. Everyone can do all the 'good guys w/ guns' things they would ever need to do w/ bolt, lever, pump, break-barrel, etc. action firearms.

#4 Because we have a Constitution. We have SCOTUS who have Found it's a Constitutional Right of citizens to keep and bear arms.

10 days will be challenged, but may stick. Not sure what the courts have ruled/Found, but it may be Found reasonable.

6 months, if it became Law it wouldn't survive the Bench.

Will it even survive a Washington State Constitutional test. We'll see.

@6,
The NRA and all pro-gun people could simply endorse and/or not challenge the 3 or 10 day (or whatever number of days) waiting periods. They always talk big about being "responsible gun owners" and say they wouldn't be opposed to reasonable measures to improve safety. A 10 day waiting period shouldn't bother anyone who plans ahead.

#7 I'm not saying I support it, but i'd imagine 10 days would survive the Bench.

So in essence it creates a defacto registry.
