It's not often that Missouri is in the news.

The first thing on the docket: did you hear about Steve West? He's the Missouri Republican who defeated three other candidates for a House of Representatives seat last Tuesday. The kicker? West is a notorious Anti-Semite and believes that Hitler was right.

From the Kansas City Star:

Steve West promotes fanatical conspiracies about “Jewish cabals” that are “harvesting baby parts” through Planned Parenthood, that torture and molest children and that run the Republican Party.

He also runs a radio show, a website, and a YouTube channel as all conspiracy-theorist types seem to do nowadays. You can watch West, clad in fake wig and fake beard, regularly unleash "an array of bigotry including homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and outright racism."

Naturally, the Missouri Republican Party is trying to distance themselves from West. The Missouri Republican Party would like to make it clear that they don't, in fact, think Hitler was right. This is an important distinction to make.

“Steve West’s shocking and vile comments do not reflect the position of the Missouri Republican Party or indeed of any decent individual. West’s abhorrent rhetoric has absolutely no place in the Missouri Republican Party or anywhere. We wholeheartedly condemn his comments."

Unfortunately, it's hard to look away from the fact that West won with 49.5 percent of the vote on Tuesday.

November's general election will pit West against Jon Carpenter, the Democratic incumbent.

Maybe things will be okay regardless. After all, West said his comments were taken out of context. Maybe he's not a Nazi sympathizer after all. That's for you to decide. Here's his explanation and pseudo-apology:

“Jewish people can be beautiful people, but there’s ideologies associated with that that I don’t agree with,” he said. “Jews today are a remnant of the tribe of Judah that rejected Christ.”

If that wasn't bad enough for Missouri, one of their nuns got busted trafficking cocaine and is awaiting sentencing.

Allegedly, Denise Marie Woodrum, 51, strayed from the path of God all the way to Sydney, Australia where she was stopped for the two pounds of coke she had stashed in her luggage. Part of it was crammed into the high-heel of her high-heeled shoes.

Decidedly not something Jesus would do, Woodrum was arrested and has remained in custody ever since. That was a year ago.

To top it all off, Woodrum, at the time a sister at the Kansas-based Catholic order Adorers of the Blood of Christ, did this for a man she met online. She was going to meet him and the items in her luggage—two pounds of coke, in case you'd forgotten—were gifts for her long-distance lover.

As of right now, Missouri has not elected the Hitler apologist to office nor has their coke-smuggling-nun been officially sentenced.
