Very dystopian, though not talking politics about why a parent would want this is pretty cowardly. If I had kids I don't know if I'd buy one but I'd certainly think about it. Certainly since we all know we'll experience several school shootings during the upcoming school year. sigh

Gladiators didn't wear armor, and I'm guessing they lost as often, or more so, than they won.

This guy is a chvmp.

3

are there places on a human body that a bulletproof backpack wouldn't protect?

6

Conservatives would seem slightly less full of shit here if they hadn't been working for 40 years against public funding of all types of health-care, including mental health care.

8

@6 - nailed it

9

"PakProduct seems like a good enough option for what it is less a solution than a last resort." Yes.

Bullying other nations* is what we do Best.

When that shit (predictably) trickles down to our Schools, THAT is The Problem.

*at the point of a gun, or, Nukes

It's odd to hear conservatives speaking up about mental health, isn't it? It doesn't seem like one of their issues at all. Smacks of empathy and all, which they normally eschew. Why this change of heart? Confusing.

12

@11 - You’re joking, right? It’s less a “change of heart,” more a “red herring stuffed with bullshit and hypocrisy courtesy of the party that slashed public funding for mental health all the way back in the 1980’s while turning guns into a needless cultural flashpoint that enabled the loosening of gun laws until the streets and schools of America made Yemen look like a cozy picnic by comparison.”

Hope that clears up the confusion.

13

@12: @11 was joking.

14

@4,

Seriously. You know, I heard they used to get George "The Animal" Steele fired up before big wrestling matches by telling him his opponents had asked him who he had voted for. Supposedly the dude would just go fucking crazy-ass, start beating people goddamn senseless, eating turnbuckles & shit. Crazy.

15

@13 - Then I gave their snark the turbo-charged venom it deserves.

16

conservatives don't give a shit about dead kids or mental health unless it's their own. That should not be surprising to anyone.

Also, not really important, but that backpack isn't gonna stop a .223 round from an AR-15. I've seen .223 rounds go through military Kevlar helmets. Front AND back.

17

@16,

Did the helmet have a head inside it? That's be quite a sight to see.

18

@11 opportunist?

20

@17:

If it had, said head/helmet would have become a shattered container for about three pounds of red and gray goo...

21

Uh-oh, looks like @19 needs to go to their safe place...

22

@16 yes

23

@17,
Haha! When I was in the Army in basic training, one of the first things they did when we started basic rifle marksmanship was demonstrate that 1) M-16's have almost no kick, and 2) a round from an M-16 (the exact same round used in an AR-15) is incredibly powerful even if it's tiny. First they shot a round through an ammo can filled with water. Went straight through, unsurprisingly. Then they took an old, WWII era, steel helmet and shot a hole straight through that, front and back. Then they said, "Don't worry, our new helmets are Kevlar. Bullet proof." And they proceeded to shoot a hole straight through that too, front and back. Then they said, "Nothing an infantry soldier can wear and move around in is bullet proof. Never forget that."

I never forgot it.

Nothing a fourth grader can wear and move around in is bullet proof.

24

@23: Not bulletproof, but that doesn't stop the army from wearing all that stuff. If the armor can absorb just enough energy, or deflect a bullet just enough, it could be the difference between life and death.

Not that it matters. No one ever claimed this was a solution, and an inventor/businessman does not have to talk politics just because a whiny blogger demanded it, so this is a non-issue anyway.

25

@24,

All true, though helmets and flak vests are actually intended to stop grenade and mortar shrapnel. They could definitely deflect bullets if struck at the right angle and I'd rather be wearing them than not.
