Lulz.

Homeland security is being used as an excuse to drive up profit margins by forcing people to buy food and drink within the walls.

2

Once reentry is outlawed, only outlaws will reenter

Bumbershoot has been an old, tired no-longer-funny joke for about the past decade. Aside from a handful of notable musical acts and some occasionally interesting theatre/comedy offerings, it's all literally the same shit year after year: same overpriced admission, same mediocre food and craft vendors, and same hordes of hot, sweaty festival-goers meandering around like lemmings looking for a good high cliff from which to jump. Now, they want to lock those same hot, sweaty, meandering hordes inside the Center grounds for the entire day - sounds like one of Dante's circles of Hell - probably about 3 or 4 - so, yes, count me out again this year.

No big loss. Bumbershoot has been crap for years now. We should just scrap the current version and go back to how was in its early years, free with lots of local performers.

5

That made my decision easy. I won't be attending. I like to step out and get a real meal at a local restaurant. F bumbershoot. It was losing steam anyway.

6

Bumbershoot sucks. I'm with @4.

This certainly cements its transformation from an event for locals, to just another destination festival for young folks with more (parent's) money than sense. It was great to be able to see an early act, leave, do some errands, come back for the headliners. They should just move it out of the Seattle Center to the suburbs somewhere. They can keep the "Bumbershoot" name and maybe Seattle can actually get a fun affordable community art festival at the Seattle Center on Labor Day weekend again.

@7
Or just another destination for nouveaux riches tech bros with no musical sensibilities, moolah to burn, and don't g.a.f. that Seattle isn't affordable anymore.

9

The acts aren't any better than they were when Bumbershoot was $12 a day, and you spent much less time in line.

Bumbershoot reached its high water mark some years back.
It’s all about the money.
The organizers plan for maximum profit: Pack them in and don’t let them leave, they can empty their wallets within the festival grounds for whatever they need for the entirety of the day.

My plan: Catch the acts that I want to see even if one act is early in the day and another is late, and not have to linger for hours in between.

My plan for myself conflicts with the organizations plan, so I will not be purchasing a ticket. If these acts are worth their salt they will come around on their own tours and can be enjoyed at that time, likely more comfortably than at Bumbershoot. It is certainly great fun to see a popular act in a large crowd outdoors, but when an organizations terms begin to restrict my ability to come and go as I please, I’m out. Really, what if I want to go to my car to grab an item, or re-park because I was in a time limited spot? All under the veil of ‘security’...erosion.

Wow. It sounds like the Bumpershoot committee shot itself in the foot under the thin veil of corporate greed and public anxiety. Thank you, Nathalie and commenters for the warnings.
How sad that a once thriving annual summer event in Seattle has turned to crap.

Correction, Sasquatch allowed re-entry this year only for 3-day-pass ticket holders, making it a purchasable perk.

I haven't been to Bumbershoot in years, but I live within walking distance of Seattle Center. Just thinking about this rule really fucking bothers me. So I can't just go home, take a nap, get a snack, drink my own beer and come back in a few hours? Fuck that shit.

14

"Security concern" my fat, hairy balls. Remind me why we allow this money machine to operate on Seattle city land?

Based on the 2015 near-bankruptcy of non-profit One Reel, Bumbershoot's revenue didn't consistently cover its expenses. Here's the full story, which is worth reading:

Give me a fucking break. Bumbershoot is the perfect representation of 2018 Seattle: completely deprived of innovation/depth, excessively expensive, inexplicably crowded and arrogantly full of it's own shit.

Bumbershoot = Seattle...so enjoy it!

This is what happens when every life experience is packaged and sold back to us by corporations. You can't just go hear music anymore, you have to be electronically labeled and categorized, your personal details provided, your digital contact info stored away. This is ground zero for corporate control. Herding the complacent sheep ... no thanks to that.

Let's make the most of it! I'm going to Yogashoot to start off my Sat and Sun. This is the first festival where yoga is coming and we're getting awesome teachers and real yoga mats (Yoga Hustle) to use...not just those cr@ppy slip and sliding ones.... Its awesome local teachers, good music, awesome mats. Best start to the day! Anybody else coming???

Thanks for the Yogashoot reminder! I can't wait for this...apparently Saturday's yoga class is being led by teachers from The Seattle Yoga Lounge! I can't wait. And finally we get to practice on Yoga Hustle mats - I have my own at home but am so happy I don't need to bring one with me to class. See you there!!

Please wait...
