I sure never said or believed there were no Jews in Seattle. Who does?

One would definitely think that there are few Jews in the Seattle when compared to back east. Unlike the east coast, Jews around here don't wear their Judaism on their sleeves: No Star of David necklaces or Yarmulkes to be seen hardly anywhere; No co-workers who miss work to observe Jewish holidays. Culturally very much on the down low where ever they are in the Seattle area.

I doubt they are all Jews..

Jews are massively overrepresented in government, media, the "1%" (but people don't like it when you bring that up) and academia, but only make up about 1% of the country. Like most small minorities, there is also a tendency to cluster in certain areas.

This may be why folks like #8 feel they are not very visible. They are very visible in public life, but in reality make up a tiny portion of our populace, leading to such perceptions.

@8 You should probably understand how Jewish life in America is before you say ridiculous things like that. There are religious Jews and secular Jews. It's no secret that the bulk of America's observant Jews are concentrated here on the east coast, but there are Jews all over America - yes, even in Seattle - and more observant religious Jews in Seattle than you probably can imagine. Not as many as Brooklyn, certainly, but all you have to do is look.

@10 It's no secret that Jews in America have raised children with an eye for overachieving. Why? Because this is the opportunity America offers that the old countries could not. It's also part of the fuel for anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Yet there is nothing crazy about having children succeed when their parents push them to succeed. Jews are the ultimate validation of the American experiment - that the downtrodden, abused, and hated could find a new opportunity in America and rise above anything that would be allowed in the old world.

Yes, we have yet to have this story prove true for African-Americans. But it won't be too long. It took the Jews centuries as well. There is nowhere on earth - not even Canada - whose opportunities for reinvention are as good as America's.
