How about giving us a ride on your plane, Council Member Sally Bagshaw?
How about giving us a ride on your plane, Councilmember Sally Bagshaw? Kelly O

Sally Bagshaw is not seeking a reelection in next year's City Council elections. She's the second sitting council member to announce that she will not seek reelection, after Rob Johnson announced the same thing earlier this month.

Bagshaw announced the news in an exclusive interview with Crosscut's David Kroman at an undisclosed "favorite downtown coffee shop" of Bagshaw. The two-term council member said she had never intended to run for a third term. Kroman called her departure "the city’s worst kept secret."

Bagshaw represents District 7, which includes Pioneer Square, Belltown, South Lake Union, Queen Anne, and Magnolia.

Bagshaw, one of the longest-serving members of the council, has held a powerful position on the council in recent years, including heading this year's budget process. Mayor Jenny Durkan told that Bagshaw has been a "key partner."

"Since I became Mayor, Councilmember Bagshaw has been a key partner—including on delivering the balanced budget," Durkan said in a statement.

Bagshaw was also a strong supporter of disgraced former Mayor Ed Murray, who resigned in September of 2017 after five men accused Murray of sexual misconduct, including rape. Bagshaw said she had "faith in this mayor" in April of 2017 after the first round of accusations against Murray were published. When fellow Council Member Lorena Gonzalez called for Murray resignation in July of 2017, Bagshaw urged her colleagues to "avoid grandstanding on this." Bagshaw later apologized to Gonzalez for the comment.

The former deputy prosecuting attorney at the King County Prosecuting Attorney's office told Crosscut that she is most proud of the work she did on the downtown waterfront, KeyArena, and funding maintenance at public parks.

Bagshaw allegedly owns both a boat and a plane but refused to give former Stranger writer Heidi Groover a ride in either. In the interest of full disclosure, my colleagues and I should say this: We are still down to go on a boat and/or plane ride with Bagshaw, even if she isn't running for reelection.
