Just think... if only Fred and MaryAnn MacCleod Trump had both been sterile what a much safer, saner utopian democracy we COULD be living in now. I feel sorry for women and girls in their reproductive years as well as little girls birth to preteens who have yet to start their menstrual cycles.
This abuse is beyond criminally shameful!
Wow this all sounds really bad! If only there was an election within the last six months where The Stranger could have forcefully and repeatedly written article after article explaining that the candidates had different policy preferences, that the parties weren’t the same, and that it was absolutely critical that people who cared deeply about issues like abortion access (among many others) vote for Kamala Harris, and do everything in its power to not provide a platform for those in favor of Donald Trump. Ah well, maybe next time!
@2: As @3 helpfully ‘explains’, having American women die of back-alley abortions and subpar medical care during pregnancy is far better than allowing “Killer Kamala” to succeed “Genocide Joe.” And yelling “Genocide Joe” was far more important than telling everyone what a Trump victory would mean for reproductive freedom.
Thank goodness we have folks like the Stranger, and the Stranger’s sympathetic commenters, to set our priorities during civic debate! They’re real assets to our community, no doubt!
There have been over 60 million abortions in the United States since the Supreme Court first ruled on Roe. I'm pretty sure that every person who wants an abortion knows that they exist. And how much more study do we need after 60 million deaths?
Of course life begins at conception. If you believe in science (which most people here claim to) then you can't argue that life does not begin at conception. You've got cells, they are consuming resources, dividing and producing waste products. That is life. You can argue about the morality of ending this life (I guess) but life it is. Human life at that.
I'll be pleased with any progress the Trump administration makes to reduce the number of abortions performed. In this case, Trump really is doing the Lords work.
Human life constitutes a lot more than cells actively dividing, and the rights of the mother should always supersede those of a clump of cells with a 50/50 shot of survival without even considering a doctor’s influence. At least it should in a country that fancies itself “free” and “equal.”
If people want to improve the chances of survival for the unborn they could support policies like universal healthcare, universal birth control access, federal child care support, and a stronger social safety net. Instead the people who oppose abortion also oppose policies that make them more rare, instead supporting policies that make pregnancy more deadly for women while barely impacting abortion rates, as the people who support these draconian policies helpfully remind us. 60 million abortions, and how many dead and disfigured women and girls who wouldn’t be if they were legally allowed to receive life-saving emergency care? No idea. I wonder what that’s all about. Maybe they just don’t think women’s lives count.
Interestingly, in humans, the initial ball of cells from the conception fails to undergo a process called gastrulation, and “…as many as 30% of human pregnancies are predicted to fail at this critical stage…” (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11463602/
Let’s see: if life begins at conception, and if anywhere near that number of conceptions fails at this stage alone, that would mean more deaths in one year than from all of the legal abortions.
So, you worship a god who kills millions of innocent human lives every year? Yep, that certainly sounds like a Trump voter!
@8: Yes, obsessively focusing on a piece of ground twice the size of Seattle, completely ignoring Hamas' continual and obvious violations of laws of international conflict, branding anyone who dared disagree with you as a "pro-genocider," carefully failing to notice that "Gaza Isn't Driving Votes"; these all kept us well away from talking about the very real threat of Trump's election, didn't it? And whose interests did that serve, exactly? Did you ever even ask yourself that?
Bernie Sanders was never going to be the Democratic nominee for president, and if he was, then a member of a religious minority, in his ninth decade, from a small and remote state, was never going to win. It was Trump or Harris, and you did everything you could to slag on Harris. So take your victory for Trump, and party with Kshama.
