Excellent idea: connect people with services after their release so they don’t reoffend. The simple ideas are the best, no need to jail everyone and their brother if all they need is a bit of help to stay on course and be a member of society.

My hope is that vehicular violence gets the spotlight and attention from this prosecutor. There are far too many people who drive in Seattle who should not be driving at all. We need a prosecutor's office that is unafraid to revoke licenses of drivers that put other road users at risk. Today a speeding driver tagged a boy right out front of his school, thank goodness the boy was unhurt but our hearts skipped a beat. Vision Zero requires that bad drivers be removed from the road. It's not like terrible drivers hide how bad they are, horrid drivers constantly advertise they are unworthy of the privilege of operating a motor vehicle. Taking away licenses for poor driving needs to be the default first resort. Yes it’s ok that shitty drivers are inconvenienced. The best thing that can happen is they learn how to take public transportation, bike, and walk and cease being poor drivers.

Ex social worker here. Offering services is great, but it's only 50% of the solution. The other 50% is the person actually engaging with said service. What's so frustrating to those of us in the helping professions it that getting people to DO SOMETHING with the help offered is most of the battle. So many people assume people in dire straits are there because NO ONE offered to help. In many cases, it simply isn't true.

@4: "There are far too many people who drive in Seattle who should not be driving at all."

As one who avails himself of a personal vehicle for shopping and other chores, I'd actually have to agree. On the other hand, pedestrians have changed over the years as well. Take a look at some old photographs and movies of the Pike Place market. Cars, trucks and pedestrians mixed quite effortlessly. But times have changed. Today, one has to be alert for sufferers of the "Fentanyl Fold"*. The Market has been given over to cruise ship tourists during that season and stumble-bums at other times. Neither group tends to buy much fresh food. And as a result, those vendors are slowly moving out. One will always be able to buy Seattle-branded souvenirs, of course. I'll be shopping the farmers markets on the East side much more.

*Also, the "iPhone Fold". Different cause, same symptoms.
