How Two Smart Drag Queens Galvanized Seattle's Rock Scene

I'll be the first one to post a comment.
As a former employee of both the Tacky Tavern and Foxes, I've seen firsthand what these two "ladies" can do. Boy, did the Seattle drag scene need them then, and we still do.
The first time I saw Jackie Hell onstage at Foxes she gave birth to a rubber chicken. The stunned, drag queen audience was horrified, and I LOVED IT. Finally. Somebody is gonna fuck this shit up! She opened doors for a whole new scene. Agnes could have never emerged from a garbage can onstage at Neighbours, and won the drag competition that night without Jackie Hell. It was punk at its best.
I met Marcus first as a boy, and a co-worker, but I certainly knew who he was beforehand. He's one of the most awesome people that I've ever met, and when he takes a stage, HE OWNS the room--AND THIS TOWN! He continues to bring vitality to a rather dull Seattle nightclub scene. I always enjoy just talking to him on the street. He's so humble, and you would never guess that there's this fucking tiger inside of him that will grab you by the throat, and stun your ass when he performs.
I've known both of them over the years as a former bartender at the Crescent as well, and whenever they choose to grace us with their presence, we have an event on our hands. They are family.
Thank you David and Marcus. I love you. You rock my world!

I really cherish the memories of the Sit and Spin shows and I'm so disappointed I can't find any old video. Tell me there is a DVD retrospective out there. They went way beyond drag and into the realm of the surreal. It all felt very punk rock to me. Like the original punk rock. The humor was so consistently black and offensive, and coming from such already bizarre personalities that it sometimes seemed the world had finally achieved the most depraved, outrageous performance art possible and the apocalypse must be at hand. I miss the songs. "City Chicken", and a masterpiece- something about almond roca..

Please wait...
