Mayor McGinn's Best Candidate for Seattle's Next Police Chief Isn't from Seattle

I'd have to give the edge to Rick Braziel.

The SPD taint of casual racism is too strong for either of the other two to be chosen.

I'd like to give the edge to Rick Braziel, but the taint of the Stranger's casual reporting leaves me wondering what they left out about the other candidates.

No Diaz please.

Jim Brunner's story in the Seattle Times today is vastly more illuminating about Davis, who sounds very compelling. Not to say Braziel may not be great and may not be a fine choice, but this reporting gives absolutely no reason not to support Davis. Look at what Davis has to say about policing and race (a bit in Brunner's story today, and more in Christine Clarridge's piece about a week ago), and consider how badly we need police leadership in Seattle that understands it is not offensive to raise questions about racial disparity. The reporting in this story is far too thin to allow the conclusion that Braziel is "the best." Bear in mind that Gil Kerlikowske was an "expert on community policing" before arriving in Seattle, too. It sounds like Braziel has fans in Sacramento, which is great as far as it goes, but there are additional dimensions to the job besides accessibility and incorporating social media into a police department.

I am sorry I would like to read all of these words through... However at this time some of these nicely articulated sentences bring an emotional response I am not interested in "Having" at this time.. Or perhaps better said I might like to some day write a book about the idea of proper policy for the people. Perhaps the city should be voting for the next police in chief and not the mayor.
Peace Ms.Killer B

I'm currently living in Sacramento (grew up in Seattle and moved away 5 years ago). Rick Braziel is, by far, the WORST choice! He's a racist and the cops here are LAZY. Do you really want someone from California???? Just look at the news in sacramento... very high crime and lazy cops. Take a good look Seattle, Sacramento is your future!

why don't you pick someone from chicagho . no corruption ever came from there right?! o i forgot al copone, jerimiah right, barac obama, van jones, will ayers, acorn, seiu, ccx the chicago climate exchange,..................................

Braziel is the only obvious choice... Davis has no experience running a large department, and Diaz is weak, ineffective, and has too many pals within the force to effectively "clean house". Braziel is obviously smart, proactive, and experienced. It's a no-brainer!

Thank you for providing me with some much-needed information on the candidates. I must admit, I know next to nothing about this whole issue.

We can all hope that McGinn's choice for our future police chief will bring transparency and accountability to our police department. Amen.

Please wait...
