A Proposed Biomass Incinerator Next to Puget Sound Is Being Promoted as "Carbon Neutral," but the EPA Isn't So Sure

As clever me (I?) noted in comments to the blog post from which this story sprang, Seattle Steam opened a biomass incinerator now churning away in downtown Seattle next to the new Four Seasons, so rich city people are about to be massacred by that I guess. Cienna, I would have emailed you with the angle but I am very shy.

Now we are afraid of steam.

@2, steam is bad. It opens the pores, little skin gates to hell.

they might be operating, but sometimes not! they might hire local but maybenot! where are the answers, why no guarantee? and operating might be good, or it might not be good! some people say this, some people say that. But one thing is certain; the cliches will continue! Some people say that injecting additional cliches into the blogosphere only contributes to mental pollution, while others say the opposite. Local environmental groups are monitoring the situation to find out what in heck they think. But one thing is certain: the entire cliche generating process will create jobs! Except that it is subject to the criticism that sometimes it won't, when it doesn't! And there's no guarantee that the jobs will be local, because we ahve no identity cards to even tell if someone is a local. Meanwhilek, others say that identity cards are bad. They could be used to profile people as local or not, and profiling is bad! Except when there isn't enough profiling, it's good! But one thing remains certain. Questions will remain unanswered. And controversy will continue!

biomass is CO2 neutral like fossil fuel is CO2 neutral. biomass takes a few hundred years to sequester the carbon visavis adequate growth.

the only people touting biomass as CO2 neutral are energy cos and their owned legislators.

does shelton really want to wreck what remains of their air by adding more particulates? for (maybe) 24 jobs?

Yo! Good reporting. Duke should be watched. SW WA. is all about the timber(and government) a "burn barrel" with crazy insane O2 recycle aint as bad as alot of other things. We need some give and take enviornmentally(?) as we transition.
7
The irony is that the hog fuel and slash piles are likely already being burned to prevent devastating forest fires. Instead of being used to generate electricity, its basically being wasted. Biomass plants are not likely carbon neutral, but they are way better than coal, oil, or natural gas plants. If Shelton's irrational NIMBYism stops this plant from being built, then they probably deserve the high unemployment/poor economy they have.

Plants and trees eat CO2. It is not a real issue folks. Rocks falling from space is more of a proven threat than global warming...

9
Seattle residents might be interested to know this is not just a Shelton problem. The prevailing winds at the plant site would blow this stuff northeast, right into YOUR air. The company's ORCAA filing admits that the plant will emit a number of Hazardous and Toxic Air Pollutants, as well as 240 tons/yr of Nitrous Oxides and 149 tons/yr of Sodium Dioxide, both Regulated Air Pollutants and components of ACID RAIN. Not to mention 248 tons of Carbon Monoxide. Burning wood is no way to help the planet.
10
First off TimeToThink you are either a liar or an idiot.

Sodium Dioxide (one sodium and two oxygen atoms) is a compound that is at best, not long for this world if it ever exist at all as a intermediary. (Na-O-O-)
Perhaps you mean Sodium Peroxide (two sodium and two oxygen atoms
Na-O-O-Na)
Second point. Any Sodium oxide combo will be ANYTHING but acidic. Quite the opposite really. Actually it will form more of a strong base. It will not cause acid rain you ignorant jackass.

Before you go and regurgitate others work, check for two things:
a) Make sure your source is not more ignorant than you are when it comes to maters of which you speak
b) Make sure what you speak is worth mentioning.

Many people make a whole bunch of money selling fools like you on global warming and how industry is destroying out planet. Make sure the chicken little you got your “facts” from actually is credentialed in the subject of which they speak and not just selling a book…

The moron from whom you copied the above info is no scientist and certainly has no idea of chemistry….

The Al Gores of this world hurt, not help the world and the environment. That SOB is laughing all the way to the bank because fools like you think he actually knows of which he speaks….he doesn’t and has proven that many times….

Don’t be such a gigadouche
11
Also worth mention that Evergreen State College is BACKING the biomass project! Guess anyone really can be bought!
12
Only 12 out of those 24 permanent positions would actually come from the community!
13
Why do we need our taxpayer dollars allocated for "green" projects going to an overseas corporation that is doing about as much for the environment as I can building a bonfire in my backyard? Where's my tax payout? It's a scam. What about the polticians involved who are getting their fat cut and making promises to Adage? It makes me sick. They think everyone in Shelton is just stupid hillbillies and will take whatever they spoon up in the name of jobs. They have no respect for Shelton or Mason county, and they need to be reminded that locals still have enough backbone to do for themselves.

Please wait...
